"(null)" response from SMTP server

Hi all,

I have searched the forums for this topic and have found several people who have said they have this problem but no one has really provided a satisfactory response so I will now add my own conundrum into the mix.

I am in a reasonable sized network environment with a lot of Apple Mail users. We also have Entourage, MS Outlook/Express and Eudora. We are not exhibiting this issue on any other client regardless of platform so it is very specific to Mail. Here is the error..

The server response was: An error occured while delivering this message via the SMTP server "(null)"

Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings.

Now at this stage the user can pick a different server and we have people with multiple email accounts but it draws a blank.

Here's the thing, it is totally sporadic and effects some people more than others. I am one of the lucky ones not to be drastically effected. But it gets worse. Some people here are suggesting an Email Server problem, yet last week I sent an email internally in work using my .Mac account and the same problem happened. Has not happened since.

One of the users who encounters this problem regularly has found a solution to the problem as follows...

If the email comes up with the message he clicks on the "Edit Message" button, copies his signature and pastes it in two times, clicks on "Send" and it goes.

Now, tell me, how weird is that...

I am at the stage now where that same user is switching to Thunderbird or possibly Entourage to prove the Apple Mail application as being the fundamental issue here. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to have to port around 30 over to something else.

Effecting all sorts of models both PPC & Intel, Mac OS X (10.4.9), All patches and updates installed and using latest Mail version

Hi gerrymccoy.

Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Try also turning OFF all the network port configurations except the one needed to connect to Internet and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.

Also, Mail keeps information about outgoing (SMTP) servers in a separate list independently of the mail accounts themselves. The account settings just associate one of the available outgoing servers with each account. Deleting an account doesn’t remove from the list the outgoing server that was associated with it. Orphaned or dangling outgoing server entries (i.e. not associated with any account) sometimes cause weird sending problems.

Go to Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), choose Edit Server List from the popup menu, and delete any servers that shouldn’t be there. The Edit Server List panel shows the account each outgoing server is associated with.
