All apps crash when selecting 'print'

I just migrated from 10.3.9 to the latest Tiger. The first few attempts to print gave me a dialog box to choose printer and settings, and then whatever app I was in would crash. Since then the dialog boxes are gone - if I choose print, via key command or menu item, whatever app I'm in crashes immediately. I've downloaded and installed fresh printer drivers, repaired disk permissions, reset printing system, all to no avail. Help, anybody? Thanks

My printers include an HP LaserJet 1320 and an Epson C86, both connected via USB. I can print diagnostics, such as via Epson Printer Utility, so the computer is communicating with the printers no problem. The problem seems to be with the 'print' command in any application. Here's what the console says when I try to print from Stickies:

crashdump[5636]: Stickies crashed

Likewise from Word:

crashdump[5670]: Microsoft Word crashed

Do the crashdump #s ring a bell for anyone? I couldn't find any articles containing them on the apple support pages.

I re-installed 10.4.9 via combo updater this morning - no change. Yesterday I went through all the routines using Printer Setup Repair, but no change. Anybody? Thanks!

Just dutifully copied down w/pencil and paper all the files and the locations that HP suggested deleting (I can't print - to PDF or anywhere 🙂 ), then went searching for them. None of them are on my drive, i guess i never installed their toolkit.

This is a major brain-scratcher (and time-eater). Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Keep 'em coming, please!

Interesting clue? Every app i've tried (Safari, Firefox, Word, Stickies, Quickbooks, etc.) crash when selecting print from menu or via command-p, EXCEPT, just now, Preview. That brings up a print dialog box, which functions as it should, and prints out just fine.

What's up with that? What makes Preview different from every other app, including other Apple apps like Safari, Stickies, etc.?

Sometimes, an archive and install is faster than tracking down the cause of an issue related to just a couple files. It's like using an elephant gun to hunt squirrels, but it does work 😉
If you've trashed all the printing/printer related prefs and it still doesn't work...someone may post a simple fix, but you could be done with an archive and install by then - it's your call. I certailnly understand why you would like a more elegant solution, but, well, you get the point.

Possible solution - With a fresh mindset this morning, I attempted to print (from Stickies), and when it crashed I sent a report to Apple. Looking closely at the report, one of the possible offending things (disclaimer - I'm NOT a programmer) seemed to be something called "hpImaging.framework" It was, or was generating, a file that had end char problems. I removed its folder to the desktop, attempted to print, and, lo, the print dialog box came up, no problem. I can print to either printer, it's worked in a handful of apps so far, and, as far as I can tell, has not affected the functionality of my HP printer.

Am I playing with fire, removing such a file? Please advise if you know anything. I will report back when I've had time to thoroughly test things. If this works, then, Jeff, you may want to generate a crash report and look closely to see if something similar is happening to you.

Same problem here. If you look around, there are about three other threads with this same problem.

I Archived and Installed, and it didn't help. All apps crash still - EXCEPT Mail.app. I noticed someone else said Preview worked for him/her. So it doesn't appear any files are missing in the print system if it works for one app, but why do all other apps crash?

My next step is to downgrade to 10.4.8, and then a full Erase and Install if that doesn't work. (Feels like Windows.)

Hey there.

Guess what - same thing for me. Mac updated from 10.3.9 to 10.4.9 and now I can't print to my (HP LaserJet 5550) printers from: Safari or Firefox. Although I can print from InDesign.

I've also done all the obvious running disk utility, deleting printer plist files, reinstalling printers via the Print Center.

gspotrecords, do you seem to still be fine without your hpimaging.framework folder? I may try this as well and see what happens...

I have excactly the same problem and furthermore I cannot open "Fax & Printing" in the System Control Panel.....

Everything occured after making the usual software update.

I have tried to download and install 10.4.9. combo also without success.
Tried Disk Repair Tool - Flashing the P-Ram - Nothing works!

Anybody with good ideas apart from re-installing?
