External Monitor & Closed Lid

hi

i got a new 23'' apple hd display today and hooked it up to my macbook pro (c2d, 2.33ghz, 3gb ram) and i'm using it while my macbook pro lid/ display is closed down. - the problem is, if the lid is open it won't just use only the external hd monitor. and the performance is not as good if i do both.

but if i have the lid closed it seems that the fans are running much more often. should i be concerned that there isn't enough air-flow when running the macbook-pro with closed lid?

If it is on a flat surface it will not "breath" efficiently I would suggest using an iLap

This will allow better airflow then if it were just on a "flat" surface.

That's how it's designed to use with just an external monitor so you are doing everything OK.

I am not using the external at the moment since I am out of the office, but I could have sworn that I could open the display after waking the computer with the lid closed and the external plugged in and not have the MBP display turn on. I will have to check again but that's how I have been using mine. Wake up with lid closed, wait a few moments and open the screen and have it remain off. This way I can heat the room thru the keyboard.

Air is drawn in through the keyboard to aid in cooling. I would suggest leaving the lid open a bit. Your fans should be quieter too.
