MAC internal sound access

I've recently had to purchase a piece of software to make it possible to record audio coming directly from my soundcard. In my system preferences/sound I only have choices for build in mic or audio line in.

Is this normal, or is my Mac OS configured incorrectly. I'm used to using a Windows PC where I always was able to directly access the audio feed from the sound card.
