Installing HP 720C printer

I've been trying to get my old HP 720C printer working with the MacBook without success.

I bought a USB to parallel connecter and connected the printer to the MacBook, which recognised it by name straight away.

I installed ESP Ghostscript and PNM2PPA and it not only recognised the printer but brought up the correct driver as well.

I installed everything and now I have the printer listed, but whenever I try to print to it I get the message "Looking for HEWLETT-PACKARD DESKJET 720C'" with the blue and white spinning pole, and it stays like that for ever or until I quit. It isn't locked up or anything - I can stop jobs or hold and resume individual jobs.

Any ideas I can try?

Another side issue, I seem to have lost my PrintingServices startup item in /System/Library/StartupItems/PrintingServices. I have the folder, just not the file of the same name it contains. As this is just a simple text file, can anyone tell me what it should contain?

iBook G3, MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.9)
