Logic Express/Mackie Onyx 1620 PROBLEMS!

Im a newb so go easy!

I have my macbook connected to the Onyx 1620 desk with a firewire cable. Im getting a good signal in from the desk to Logic. With a guitar in the desks Channel 1 i am getting a signal in Logics Channel 1. So all good there.

None of the desks channel faders or main mix fader effects the signal in any way, no matter how much you move them. This might be normal as the mic pres line out is pre-everything on the desk so you get a pure signal to your DAW.
BUT - no matter how much i move Logics fader it seems to not have any effect on the incoming signal at all. When i move the logic channel 1 fader up and down it changes the volume of the guitar i hear in my headphones, but looking at the meter bridge on logic it seems to still be getting a full signal from the guitar, even if the fader is down fully!

Why is this? I seem to have no control what so ever over the levels of anything i am recording?! The only thing that seems to effect the signal on logic is by tweaking the Gain pot on the desk.

Maybe i have configured my system wrong? The only changes i made is that under Applications i went to Ulitilities and into Audio MIDI Setup. Under Audio Devices i changed Default Input, Default Output and System Output all to Onyx Firewire. Under Logic Preferences i changed the Audio Driver to Onyx Firewire.

Please help me out im so confused! Thank you so much for all your time if you read all this!

Wierd.

So your saying i just record at the levels it automatically comes into logic at? And i cant change or have any control over those levels except by using the Desks Gain pot?

One last thing, there seems to be a very, very slight, milli
second of a delay between when i hit the guitar string and when
i hear it in my headphones. Can this be solved too?

Thanks,
Steve.

O.K. I will then... 😉

Excellent,grashopper,excellent...

effects the signal in any way, no matter how much you
move them. This might be normal as the mic pres line
out is pre-everything on the desk so you get a pure
signal to your DAW.

And that is normal. The channel direct outputs are post GAIN pot,and pre everything else.please look at the schematic [that's the pretty black and white diagram] that came with your desk.

BUT - no matter how much i move Logics fader it seems
to not have any effect on the incoming signal at all.
When i move the logic channel 1 fader up and down it

This is called "Pre-Fader metering" and it is your friend.

Why is this? I seem to have no control what so ever
over the levels of anything i am recording?! The only
thing that seems to effect the signal on logic is by
tweaking the Gain pot on the desk.

Ah,but Grasshopper you DO have control, you are only looking in the wrong places. The WHITE GAIN knob is the ONLY gain control you have,in this desk. The only other way is to use a group fader, but I do not know if the FireWire card supports anything other than direct output recording.

Maybe i have configured my system wrong? The only
changes i made is that under Applications i went to
Ulitilities and into Audio MIDI Setup. Under Audio

System Output all to Onyx Firewire. Under Logic

Again,Grasshopeer, you are looking in all the wrong places, for the control.Save yourself hassle, read manual promptly and thoroughly. It is there for YOU...you should be mindful and be there for IT.

Please help me out im so confused! Thank you so much
for all your time if you read all this!

Maybe now you are less confused.

Hi,

The Shure SM57 (I own a pair) is a Dynamic mic,and as such is not very sensitive (i.e. it is not very loud).

However, when I do use mine,I find gaining on a Mackie like yours,at about to 2pm (or 42dB) works in most situations to get full scale into Logic.

So,if you are able to get your hands on a second one, test it.It sounds as if the mic might have an issue. And also try a different channel, just to make sure it is not the mixer channel.

Cheers

Be sure you understand that hitting 0dB on the mackie means you will be -20 dBFS on logic ( approximate ). This is correct. This is analog vs disgital.

Have a look here for a summary on the mackie forums:

An article from Sound on Sound overviewing Metering standards and how 0dB equaltes to the digital world.
