Apple TV and Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW monitor -- should it work?

I have a Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW monitor that I use as a TV (I plug my Tivo into it with the S video cable). Should the Apple TV work with this monitor? I bought a HDMI to DVI cable and connected the Apple TV to the monitor and chose the DVI input but the Apple TV doesn't show up. If I hit one of the buttons on the monitor I get a message that says something about sleep mode and I should hit any key on the keyboard.

Can anyone offer some advice please?
