Deleting e-mail without opening

I do not want to open e-mail from senders that I do not recognize. How can I point to an e-mail and delete it without it opening??

Close the message preview pane by double-clicking on the horizontal divider bar that separates the message list from the preview pane.

Doing so requires double-clicking on a message in the message list to open a selected message.

The Mail.app does not include a read receipt request for sent messages nor does it provide a read receipt when requested by the sender of a message when opening a received message without your knowledge.

As long as you don't have "display remote images in HTML messages" selected, you can open any received message using Mail with no concern.

If you are a recent Windows switcher, you don't have anywhere near the same constant concerns as a Windows user does by just opening email or with anything else.
