What's the purpose of Logic Board?

Hi ,
When I can't boot my G3 mini tower with OS 9.2 from Hard disk and CD , I send it to Apple Centre and was diagnose by them that there was a logic board problem.

And later I bring it back and send to another service centre to recover my data ,I was told that the Hard Disk also fail to works now, so they can't recover my data back.

While I bring back the computer, I starts up with insert a Norton System disk, now it's can detect the CD (Previously before sending it to Apple Centre was unable to do so), the only problem now is it can't found the Hard Disk (even when starts up without insert Norton System disk, it's was only a blinking question mark disk icon), therefore I confirm the HD is fail.

Now I m confuse that does the Apple Centre really troubleshoot it properly?
What is the main function of logic board? If I'm able to boot from CD now compare to before sending it to Apple Centre and I change a New hard disk, will my computer able to function it as normal by just install New OS software?

Hi, Atomant2006 -

The main function of the Logic Board is to operate the machine. In a sense, the Logic Board is the computer - everything else supports it and provides additional hardware services.

The fact that your machine will now boot to a CD would indicate the Logic Board is not damaged. Or, that whatever caused the fault previously (for you and for the service tech) has self-corrected - this could have been a loose connection somewhere; or a loose chip (doubtful); or even a near-microscopic crack in the board which resulted in a circuit being interrupted, but one which, under stress of moving the computer around, shifted back into place.

There's no real way for us to tell what may have caused the Logic Board to appear to have been faulty.
