Error -39, tool "mail" could not be loaded, AOL

This error box appears when I open the AOL 9.0 application with phone modem. It has progressed to disabling access to websites, although email functionality is still okay. The temporary workaround that allowed bypassing the "-39" error was: click "ok," switch screen ID names, quit AOL, reopen AOL, switch back to primary screen ID name, sign on. Any help here will be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Machooray!

There is no AOL 9 for Mac OS X. Don't you have AOL For Mac OS X Version 10.3.7 (Revision 4136.xxx (US))?

I can probably help you though. I'll start composing a response, but as you have posted this Topic in an incorrect Forum, I'm sure the Hosts will relocate it to a more appropriate place. It will probably be moved to here Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger: Getting Online & Networking.

Or you can repost your question in that location yourself.

You're Email Subscription Notification will automatically redirect you to the Topic.

See You There!

Machooray,

There is no need to repost your Topic, as the Hosts have already moved this Thread to the correct Forum.

*AOL ERROR 39/MAIL TOOL
This error is usually caused by a corrupt PFC - Your AOL Personal Filing Cabinet.

First, If you are able to, open your Filing Cabinet from the AOL Menubar's contextual File menu. If you can't do that while signed on, try signing off, but don't quit AOL, and try again.

If there are things in there that you can't bear to lose, there are a few ways you can save them.

Method 1. Drag the item/items to a New Folder on the Desktop. Name the folder something like Old PFC. This folder can later be placed wherever you wish.

Method 2. Open the item/items, select Save or Save As from the AOL Menubar's contextual File menu. The files will be copied to the Desktop. You can then put them all in a folder, as in method #1.

Method 3. Open the item/items and make copies in a Word Processing application and again, save to a new folder. This folder can also be placed anywhere you choose, such as the Documents folder, in your Home Account folder, located;
HD > Users > Your Home Account > Documents

After you have verified, that the Email transfer was successful, sign off, and quit AOL.

Go to: HD > Users > Shared > America Online: HERE, you'll find (Your Screenname)'s Filing Cabinet.

Move that file to the Trash, but DO NOT empty the Trash. If this procedure does not rectify your situation, you can replace the new PFC with the old one. But I wouldn't recommend it.

Load AOL, Sign-on and see if it's fixed. If all is well, and you've made the copies of important data, there's really nothing in the old PFC that you need, so you can empty the Trash.

I've never had this particular problem, but I seldom keep more than a few items in my AOL PFC.
If I want to keep an article of mail, I use method #3.

If that doesn't clear it up, sign off and quit AOL. Pull your AOL Your Screenname's Favorites folder, which is located:
HD > Users > Shared > America Online: HERE, to the Desktop.

When you relaunch AOL, a new Your Screenname's Favorites folder will be created.

If the problem is corrected, you can drag the old copy of Your Screenname's Favorites, that is on the Desktop to the Trash, and empty it.

If that doesn't do it you can replace the new Your Screenname's Favorites with the old copy of Your Screenname's Favorites, that is on the Desktop, but again, I don't recommend it.

I wish you success, and advise if you have any additional questions.
