Converting files to Mpeg-4

Hey Everyone...
I just bought myself the new JVC Everio hardrive camcorder and have run into a problem. My new camera saves all the files I record with the extension of .moi and .mod. I am very new to video editing and am not too familiar with the technical words for things. I love to use iMovie to really edit all of my stuff and am about to switch over to Final Cut Pro Express. I love my new camcorder but the problem I am running into is that (from what I know) iMovie will only read Mpeg-4 files. I have tried several different applications via versiontracker.com to convert these including "Handbrake" but the problem with these is that I lose the video quality that I want (and paid for by buying an HDD camera). I have done a little research and have found that QuicktimePro has the capabilities to convert these files for me so that I can then put them into iMovie to work with. I really don't know if QuicktimePro will do this for me. Is there any other program out there that will easily convert these files and still keep some of the video quality?? Any advice at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!

Please don't be too harsh on the responses if this doesn't make any sense. As I have said I am new to video editing and have only been working with Macs and iMovie for about a year.

MacBook (2 GHz Intel Core Duo/1 GB), Mac OS X (10.4.9)
