getting cd out during bootup

I created a 'bootable' backup and changed the startup drive to test it. Well, it didn't work originally so I put the install disk in which wanted to just re-install the OS.

I certainly didn't want that so I re-booted and tried all the key combinations that supposedly would allow me to eject the disk, choose startup disk, etc and none work. I'm trying once again to boot off of the external USB drive and it's taking forever. I have the 'Mac OS X' splash screen up but it's just sitting there, animation still going. There doesn't appear to be any more USB disk activity so I think it's toast at this point.

Any suggestions what I can do?

Pressing mouse button during startup doesn't eject disk
Pressing 'D' during startup doesn't force the internal HD to be the startup drive
Option doesn't lead to the startup manager

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

David

Are you sure your connection of the mouse/keyboard is good?
Because it sounds like nothing is actually communicating with the Mac.
Hard power-off by holding the power key until it shuts down (after you check all USB connections)
Immediately after you hit the power button to startup, hold down the mouse button.

Are you by chance using a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard?
