Anyone know how get some good metal tones for guitar?

I'm plugging straight in through a boss metalzone and setting the amp simulation on clean but I haven't been able to get it to sound halfway decent. I've been screwing around with different amp simulations for days and I can't get any tones that I really like. I've tried bypassing my metalzone but the preset distortions have way to much feedback and noise. Any suggestions on what settings to use? by the way, I play progressive thrash/death/black/doom metal and I'm using logic express 7.2.3

If you don't like the tone, you don't like the tone. Time to start experimenting.

Don't use presets. Tweak knobs.

Add extra plugs and see what happens. Use EQ. Use delay. Download other amp emulators and see if you like them.

Or, you know, mic your stack.

I've used Amplitube for some stuff. It's neat. Still, you should be able to "make" the tone you want using LE's plugs (and/or GarageBand's)

Yeah, I second chaining different Plug-Ins. Also try using Bus Sends and Aux tracks to blend certain amounts of effects. With this, try mixing 3 or more Guitar Amps on Aux Tracks with different settings on each, or slightly different from each one, and pan them to something you like. I have found this to be extremely awesome. I got the idea after reading how they engineered 10,000 Days by Tool and found Adam Jones uses 3 cabinets with an SM57, 421, and another mic to complement the 57 and 421, and they put 3 mics on the cabinets, so the guitar sound was made of 9 tracks and were never EQ'ed because they could use those tracks as EQ and tweak it the way they wanted.

There's the article. Good luck and enjoy!

I'm not sure if you are plugging direct to your mac or going through an interface but you might want feed your Metalzone through a preamp.

I've been able to get some pretty decent sounds by splitting my signal. I have one connection going to Korg AX3000, the signal comes out of the Korg and I plug this into my external sound card. This takes one channel in LE.

The 2nd connection connects to a pre-amped input on my soundcard and is connected to 2nd channel in LE. I EQ 1st which helps to get rid of some of the noise, I then gate, then amp sim. Depending on the gain you want you will have to work with the eq as well as the amp sim can be quite noisy.

Most of the distortion comes from the Korg while teh 2nd channel is used to round out the sound so I often use a clean setting on the sim. I will also do multiple, assign to individual tracks and adjust each instance to get a fuller sound.
