Port 5353 : how to open it?

Hi,

Bought one of the first ATV. Impossible to connect, not even through direct Ethernet. No show in iTunes under "device". IPod works fine, iTMS too (I buy a lot of music), ATV goes to iTMS fine through Wi-Fi acces. I have 2 Macs : iMac and Macbook. None sees ATV. Went through tons of posts. Nothing helped.

Finally gave ATV to a Windows friend. He switches it on ang gets it IMMEDIATELY in iTunes for WXP. No fuss, nothing, just as in the manual. We share a Wi-Fi network, the same. Same subnet. He did through DHCP. No MAC adressing.

I scanned my ports again and saw that my 5353 was not LISTENing. How to open it? Firewall is disabled, no anti-virus, no NetBarrier, nothing. Music is shared (I see it with the Macbook and the iMac sees the shared Macbook music).

So, I am lost. The 5353 thing is the last chance. But the most difficult to bear is that Windows did it with no trouble.

Thanks and sorry for such a long post.

Alex

For a port to be listening there needs to be some software running that listens on that port to accept connections for whatever function the software provides via the port and the port needs to be open at the firewall to allow incoming connections.

You don't need to do anything to open a port other than to possibly adjust your firewall settings. If there is no software running that uses a particular port then there is nothing running at that port to accept connections from an external device.

In your case, your problems with Apple TV were more likely the result of an incorrect setting somewhere. If iTunes was running and the ports it uses were not blocked by a firewall, the problem was not a port access problem.

Thanks for replying.

That's what I thought too. But why then when I check all the services in Sharing tab a lot of new ports appear and show LISTEN.

In fact what's most frustrating is that Windows does it. Why???? Everything is the same, except the computer. I feel it is something easy and it has to be with my Macs. It is just impossible that Apple would let go such a difficult to setup product. I see a lot of posts with connection problems.

Thanks, Have a nice one.

Keep in mind that an OS is not a single program, it is a symphony of software playing together to make your computer work. There are always a lot of active ports running on a computer so that different software programs and devices can talk to each other, so it's not unusual to see a lot of port activity.

To use Apple TV you should have iTunes Sharing turned on in the Firewell settings located in the Sharing folder in the System Preferences panel. You might also try turning on Personal File Sharing and Remote Apple Events in the Service settings.

With the above settings, your Apple TV should be able to connect to your Mac, but you also have to authorize your Mac in the Apple TV settings.

In addition to your Mac settings, your router most likely also has a firewall running so you might want to check those settings as well if you're still having problems connecting.

Router is probably firewalled, but it is the same than my lucky Windows friend.

I checked all services running.

If you have 5 sec...why can't I see the ATV when I just plug it in with an ethrnet cable. Green LED blinks, cable OK. I just see nothing.

I have a sad feeling that Apple is pushing towards buying their own router, but still...why does Windows see the ATV instantly and I don't?

Thanks,

Alex

Alex,
I sympathize with you since I just went though a similar situation myself. I, however, had a working system that suddenly stopped working after the last iTunes update. After trying lots of things I came to the conclusion that Bonjour (which uses port 5353) wasn't seeing anything on the network.

Like you, I searched through lots of post without much luck but I finally found a post that suggested re-installing the latest OS X update from the Apple download page since this does the install a little differently than the automatic software update. (make sure to repair permissions first).

I did this and it worked! It did take a little time to find everything so don't be surprised if the AppleTV doesn't show up right away. Give it time. In my case, I checked it right the install and it didn't show up so I went off to do some other things thinking I had failed. But, when I returned a couple of hours later everything was working.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
DAD

Look in the network settings of your Apple TV and make a note of its network IP address, then open the terminal window in your Mac and enter the following command:

traceroute 192.168.x.x (192.168.x.x being whatever your Apple TV network IP address is)

If the trace goes all the way through to your Apple TV then your Mac is able to connect to it, which means that the problem is most likely the firewall or service settings in the System Preferences in your Mac or your Mac is not authorized in the Apple TV settings. Look in the Sources list in your Apple TV and see if your Mac is listed there.

If the trace stalls at your router then your router's firewall is most likely blocking access, which means you need to change the firewall rules to allow access between Apple TV and your Mac.

If the trace doesn't reach your router your network settings are not correct in your Mac.

Hi DAD,

Thanks for the advice. I DL'd the 10.4.9, but it refuses to install, says 'unrecognized'.

But, I ran Netstat and it clearly says "No IPv4 multicast routing compiled into this system". I beleive my problem is linked to that, my Bonjour functions, port 5353 on my machine.

No firewall at all, plain OSX 10.4.9 by automatic update, ATV not recognized with direct ethrnet cable. I can ping ATV with no problem. It's got to be my Macs.

Thank you for advice anyway.

Best regards,

Alex

Alex,

If 10.4.9 won't install, it means either that you downloaded the wrong version (was it the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (Intel) or something else?) or that your system has some sort of problem -- perhaps the file system has errors, permissions aren't correct, you have an incompatible extension, etc.

You should concentrate on resolving this before worrying about ports, which a healthy OS will take care of automatically.

FWIW, the message you got is normal & has nothing to do with Bonjour -- multicasting, as the name implies, allows a device to send packets to a group of hosts rather than to individual ones.

I install all updates through automatic update. So, I guess it just can't be a wrong version. And I DL'd and tried to install the version you kindly mention in your post. Everything works, I do not have even the slightest problem with both Macs. My .Mac account works fine, my syncing with all my 3 cell phones (Nokia, Motorola, SonyEricsson) work perfectly. IPod works great, Sony cam works great, 3 brands of digital camera connect fine.

In fact, everything is fine. My only problem is the ATV.

Sorry to unpack it again:

- Mac OS X 10.4.9 installed with auto update
- All security updates and all firmwares and Apple updates
- iTunes 7.1.6
- Firewall disabled
- All services opened
- No NetBarrier
- No Third party software (except some widgets)
- ATV works fine with a windows PC on the same router
- I have only one subnet
- I can ping it from my Mac
- ATV can connectr to iTunes
- When I plug an ethernet cable (working) nothing happens.
- iTunes music shared
- My Macbook sees and plays music from the iMAC and vice versa
- Searching for ATV checked

Once again, it works with WXP faultlessly, with DHCP settings. It connected quicker than a bear disappears on a hot day.

Thank you for any idea, because I am stuck. I feel that it is something easy, but can't find it.

Many thanks to all following this thread.
