Finder crash

Question

Finder crash

All of a sudden, there were some folders that cause Finder to crash when I click on them (can move the contained files using terminal and view them elsewhere, and the files themselves are fine). Then after a while, and perhaps a reboot, Finder would just constantly flickering off and on.

First tried doing archive/install of OS, but happened again. Then saved a disk image on an external drive, did erase/install, and moved my stuff back over via Migration Assistant, but it's starting again.

Any suggestions?

Hi bridgeteileen ,

Have you tried deleting your Finder prefs?
~/Library/Preferences and trash these two files:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

Then log out and back in again. Or restart.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

I tried that, but it didn't change anything. Also, when I logged back in, those files still existed (although maybe they're different now?).

Yes, it should have created new Finder and Sidebar prefs.

Try this: Look in ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items.

Log out and back in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

There is no folder ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items, and /Library/Contextual Menu Items is empty.

OK, so it's not contextual menu items or Finder Prefs.

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your Finder behaves in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.

Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.

Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

btw - what type of files are those and can you move them off your Mac?

This doesn't happen with files, it happens when I try to click on certain folders. The folders may contain pictures, documents, music, etc. Not all folders, but certain ones consistently. I can use Terminal to copy the contained files onto the Desktop, and I can open them there.

Nothing is happening right now with the other user, but then again there aren't any folders or files there. I was able to scroll down the list of applications, which includes a few files, and Finder didn't crash during that.

Have you run Disk Utility --> Repair Disk? Sounds like there could be some kind of directory problem.

I've run Disk Repair, and it reported that there were no problems to fix.

it seems like cocoa error, there's good possibilities these object (folder) are corrupted and you have to remove and recreate them. if you have any terminal.app experiences you can use it for move and backup files from corrupted folders.

Sounds right to me. Can you make new folders, copy the contents and check the behavior?

I can do that, but could the problem come back?

Also, there are enough folders having this problem that it seems like there's something more widespread going on...

Pick a half a dozen folders with the problem. See if creating new folders and copying the contents solves it.

the erase and install deleted all possibilities of system software corruption, if FileSystem is integer i think the data (folder) are the guilty. IMHO.
