iSync: How to troubleshoot sync issues related to .Mac

Apple has added this technical note regarding troubleshooting iSync and .Mac Sync to the Technical Information library.

You can try some things if you are having difficulty syncing with your .Mac account—for example, attempting to sync with .Mac results in contacts or appointments not transferring as expected, or an alert message.

First, make sure you can connect to your .Mac account

1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
2. From the View menu, choose .Mac.
3. Click "iDisk". Your computer will attempt to connect to the .Mac server to see how much disk space is available on your iDisk.

If the computer cannot connect to your iDisk

• Make sure your network connection is active and configured correctly
• Verify the computer's date and time
• Make sure that you have entered your .Mac account information correctly in the .Mac preference

You connect to .Mac, but iSync is not behaving as expected when syncing with .Mac

1. Unregister and re-register the computer under a new name.
2. Click the .Mac button in iSync.
3. In the setup pane that appears, select your computer's name from the list of registered computers.
4. Click the "Unregister selected computer" button.
5. A confirmation dialog appears. Click the Unregister button.
6. After the computer is unregistered, click the Register button to re-register this computer with the .Mac synchronization server.
7. In the field that appears, enter a different name for this computer than you used before .
8. Click Continue. When the .Mac setup window appears, choose the option you prefer from the "For first sync" pop-up menu.
9. Perform a Sync by clicking the Sync Now button in the iSync window.

If the issue persists, reset all devices using This Computer as the reset source

1. Make sure that all your data is correct, current, and up-to-date in your Mac OS X Address Book, iCal, and Safari.
2. Open iSync, then choose Reset All Devices from the Devices menu.
3. In the window that appears, select This Computer as the reset source.
4. Click Reset All.

Reset iSync completely as a last resort

1. Make sure that all your data is correct, current, and up-to-date in your Mac OS X Address Book, iCal, and Safari.
2. Download and install the latest version of iSync.
3. Using a Palm OS device with iSync? Download and install the latest version of the iSync Palm Conduit.
4. Setup your devices in iSync again.
5. Setup your .Mac account in iSync. Enter a new computer name when registering this machine as described above.

I don't necessarily agree with this article in its entirety—and have submitted some suggested changes—but, it is the official word…

Apple has added this technical note regarding
troubleshooting iSync and .Mac Sync to the Technical
Information library.

You can try some things if you are having difficulty
syncing with your .Mac account—for example,
attempting to sync with .Mac results in contacts or
appointments not transferring as expected, or an
alert message.

connect to the .Mac server to see how much disk space
is available on your iDisk.

I can do this ok
If the computer cannot connect to your iDisk

• Make sure your network connection is active and
configured correctly
• Verify the computer's date and time
• Make sure that you have entered your .Mac account
information correctly in the .Mac preference

yes, done this
You connect to .Mac, but iSync is not behaving as
expected when syncing with .Mac

1. Unregister and re-register the computer under a
new name.

Cannot get at the advanced setting to change this - it just won't let me
2. Click the .Mac button in iSync.

It is not displaying
3. In the setup pane that appears, select your
computer's name from the list of registered
computers.
4. Click the "Unregister selected computer" button.
5. A confirmation dialog appears. Click the
Unregister button.
6. After the computer is unregistered, click the
Register button to re-register this computer with the
.Mac synchronization server.
7. In the field that appears, enter a different name
for this computer than you used before .
8. Click Continue. When the .Mac setup window
appears, choose the option you prefer from the "For
first sync" pop-up menu.
9. Perform a Sync by clicking the Sync Now button in
the iSync window.

If the issue persists, reset all devices using
This Computer as the reset source

Again option not available
1. Make sure that all your data is correct, current,
and up-to-date in your Mac OS X Address Book, iCal,
and Safari.
2. Open iSync, then choose Reset All Devices
from the Devices menu.

Just won't open
3. In the window that appears, select This Computer
as the reset source.
4. Click Reset All.

Reset iSync completely as a last resort

1. Make sure that all your data is correct, current,
and up-to-date in your Mac OS X Address Book, iCal,
and Safari.
2. Download and install the latest version of iSync.

Where is it available for download - I can only see version 1.5 ?
3. Using a Palm OS device with iSync? Download and
install the latest version of the iSync Palm
Conduit
.

Do they mean IF you are using a palm device, or is going out and getting one a method of fixing this ?
4. Setup your devices in iSync again.
5. Setup your .Mac account in iSync. Enter a new
computer name when registering this machine as
described above.

I wish this option was available to me !
I don't necessarily agree with this article in its
entirety—and have submitted some suggested
changes—but, it is the official word…

I think I can see why Michael !!
