iphoto and digital picture frames

I'm thinking of getting a digital picture frame for Mom so she can get access to many of the digital pictures I have of her grandkids but she never sees because I tend to just share them electronically! But, when I import, I always have it erase the photos on the memory card so it's ready for the next use. If I get one of these frames, how would I get the photos from my iphoto library to the digital picture frame, which appears to use memory cards. Can I export photos from the library back onto a memory card?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Yes, you can add photos to the memory card with a card reader. Check out the pixel dimensions that the display uses. Export the photos you want to use to a folder on the Desktop. Then use the freeware Resize! to convert the files to the pixel dimensions used by the frame. You can also experiment with the compressions/quality level so as to get as small file as possible that's acceptable. This will let you get more photos on the frame and let it change photos more quickly.

One thing to remember is that the frame should come with a card and it will probable be formatted for PCs. Don't change it but you may have some problems adding files to the card. I could get just so many, about 89 even though the card was a 1G. From there I had to add them 1 or 2 at a time. Very strange behavior but that the PC side for you.

Some frames may be connectable to the computer with a USB cable. That you'll have to try yourself. Mine didn't.

If you don't have a card reader it's worth while getting one that can handle multiple types. It makes uploading from a camera a little safer as you won't be susceptible to possible shutdown during transfer due to low battery which can damage the library. Also saves on the camera battery.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Another thing to keep in mind; my mother-in-law bought a picture frame for which I was to supply a memory card of pictures. After wrangling with it, I discovered the picture frame by design displayed photos in alphanumeric order, which caused it to not recognize any file that started with other than a letter or number. For some reason, the files I transferred all started with a period before the original file name (e.g. instead of IMG0001.jpg it transferred as .IMG0001.jpg). This is likely only specific to that brand digital frame, but it took me a considerable amount of time to figure out.
