Airport Extreme and PPPoE

I'm sitting in Namibia and my local ISP "Mweb Namibia" uses PPPoE.
When I connect the cable modem directly to my Powerbook G4, I can go online. As soon as I start trying to use the PPPoE log of the Airport Extreme Base Station or of the Airport Express, I can't connect to the Internet.
Today we tried a DLink router with same PPPoE configurations- no problem.
Has anybody an idea here?
Is the PPPoE log-in of the AEBS different from the PPPoE log-in that my Powerbook uses???

Tix,
I have the exact same problem using an Alcatel Speed Touch Home ADSL modem with the AEBSn when connecting to my ISP (Telepac). It works flawlessly with the Airport Express that I have.

After reading a bit about the problem, I think the problem lies with an incompatibility of either:

a) the AEBSn with the ADSL modem; or
b) the AEBSn with the settings on the ISP.

I'm more inclined to think it's the latter, because you said an identical setup of your supplier worked with a different ISP. Further, I think it might be an authentication problem, but this is just a hunch....

Dude,

had the same problem with an AEBS that worked fine and then just "died"....

I even bought a new Express to "solve" the problem as all was working before however the AEBS was relatively old which I bought when I lived in Japan.

I noticed in the different bulletins from Apple that they "improved" the software with regard to PPPoE.....could this now be the problem.......?

I reset the AEBS from V5.7 to 5.4 and bingo......all works again....

I would recomend that you d/l the older V5.4 and load this to your AEBS...I am convinced it should work....

Good luck and hang ten dude....

Pedro,

I'm having the exact same problem with AEBSn and Alcatel Speedtouch Home. I've tried also with a D-Link DSL-320T ADSL modem and it kept not working. Almost an entire weekend around this and found no solution. Re-connecting any of the modems to a Linksys WRT-54G works flawlessly...

I don't think is an ISP problem, but instead a AEBSn one. If it was an ISP problem, then the Linksys router wouldn't work also.

Any help to solve this is welcome. I wouldn't like to quit on this AEBSn and get my money back.

Exact same problem here.
ISP: Bell Canada (Sympatico)
PPPoE via DSL. Modem connected to AEBS.
Wireless connection was working fine for 20months, and suddenly "died" yesterday for no apparent reasons.
Internet works fine when Mac is hard-wired to Modem.
iMac finds the AirPort network but cannot connect to the PPPoE host.

Uploading firmware v5.4 to the AEBS did not solve the problem.
Any other suggestions?

Zebra1,
You didn't ready Mac-lover's post correctly - he doesn't mention it working with his computer(s) wired to the router, but to the modem - this is the problem we're all having - if it's the computer or another router making the PPPoE connection it works perfectly well with modem "x" and provider "y", it only doesn't work when it's either the AEBSn with any firmware or the old AEBS with the latest firmware, which points to a problem on the way the PPPoE part of the question is being handled.

Amadex,
I haven't tried to actively find a solution. I'm using the AEBSn as a range extender and bridge, and the little 'ol Express as the main router. I still think it's a question of the PPPoE implementation on Apple's part, I've been trying to see if I can find someone at Telepac that would be willing to spend some time on the problem, to see if there's something on their side that they could change to make it compatible with the AEBSn.

I have exact same problem here in Jordan
after trying everything I can think off to solve this problem, nothing worked.
my DSL account is 2MB speed, I tried another account 512K speed and the AEBSn worked fine. used 1MB speed account and it worked fine also. When I use any 2MB speed account the AEBSn stops working. very weird .

Now I setup the AEBSn on a bridge mode and got new Modem/Router.

something in (PPPOE setup in AEBSn) not working right, last night I updated the AEBSn to 7.1.1 and it is the same problem

Any other suggestions?

Amadex,
That's interesting - it appear perhaps that the PADS packet is not being well received by the AEBSn at the end of the PPPoE negotiation - for the connection to appear "active" from the provider's end. Why couldn't Apple let their previous PPPoE implementation just be the same? One thing is certain, I'm not upgrading the Airport Express until this mess is solved.
