My iBook (dual USB) has only a CD drive. A friend suggests it might be possible to use a DVD recorder as an external DVD drive. His 80GB unit has both A and B USB ports and he can connect his digital camera and his video recorder; why not an iBook? Anyone tried it?
Powermac G4 2x800/ iBook G3 700,
Mac OS X (10.3.9)
What brand and model DVD recorder are we talking about here?
It's most certainly possible to use an external DVD recorder (depending on model), although working with video is exceptionally slow with a G3 processor. Or are you just wanting to use it to watch DVD's?
Ronda: we may be talking at cross purposes here - or I may have misled you. The link you gave dealt with an external CD/DVD drive not a DVD recorder as attached to a TV in place of a VCR. FWIW, the model suggested is a Pioneer DVR-530H-S. I've always understood that these machines were not compatible with computers but I didn't know enough to contradict my friend. My problem is that I've now got Tiger on a DVD and trying to figure out how to install it on the iBook without a DVD drive. I think I'll have to resort to Apple Rescue for CDs.

You are correct. It is not possible to use a television-type DVD recorder to install Mac OS X.
You can however install Tiger via
Target Disk Mode if your friend has a Mac with a firewire port and a DVD drive, and you hook it up to your iBook.
