Changing Your Feed URL ...HELP

I have to change my podcast feed to a different location. When I first submitted the feed to iTunes I used the IP address rather than aliasing DNS (if I used DNS in the first place I could just re-point the alias … bah).

I’ve read and reread the iTunes Tech Spec ‘Changing Your Feed URL’ ( http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcaststechspecs.html) and have a number of questions:

1. If I use the <itunes:new-feed-url> tag with the new feed information but without setting the original webserver to return an HTTP 301 response and redirect when receiving a request for the old feed - will iTunes still pick up the new feed information? (Relationship with original web server provider has soured). What are the ramifications for not setting a 301 response?

2. If the answer to the above is yes, how long does iTunes take to recognise the change in feed URL? (I’ve inserted the <itunes:new-feed-url> tag in the xml over 2 hours ago and iTunes is still picking up the old feed).

3. When inserting the <itunes:new-feed-url> tag in the channel level does it matter where it’s inserted? (I would assume no but, hey, you never know).

4. The <enclosure url> and <guid> tags are using the old feed address (IP not DNS). If I have specified the new feed location in here - <itunes:new-feed-url> - can I change all past episodes ( <items> ) to the new address and will iTunes recognise this? The same goes for the <itunes:image href> tag.

Think that’s it … any help would be greatly appreciated.
