Ipod was stole

I would like to ask about what can I do after someone stole my Ipod 30GB.
I have been to police station and I have police report.
A man in Ipod shop said I have to try to contact to the service center and give them my Ipod Serial No.
They will check for me when the thief sent Ipod to repair.
Is that true??

PS. My English is not good, I'm foreigner in Malaysia.

Apple cannot track or trace your iPod. You've already done the best the best thing you can by informing your local police. If you have the serial number make sure that you have it quoted in the report. If your iPod was registered with Apple when you first got it, that will assist the Police in returning it to you should it ever be recovered: How to report lost or stolen Apple product?

There are companies that will try to track ipods that are stolen, but you have to download software onto the ipod, before it is stolen that will communication with them once the ipod is missing. There is a company that is taking a survey on theft protection. You can take this survey whether your ipod was stolen or not. They want to collect information on where, why and how ipods are and are not getting stolen. Thanks. Sorry to hear about your loss.

tech-tag has an April 23rd 2007 article. DIY: Tracking your stolen iPod. Apple can't (or has no policy to), but you can have your own policy. Why not try it? What have you got to lose if it doesn't work 100% of the time? Professionals put on a helmet to play football. It's not 100% effective, but it's effective enough to use it.
