Help - can't access one website from my Macs, but I can on my PCs

A couple of days ago, I stopped being able to access at least one specific website on my Mac.

It’s my own domain so I haven’t been banned or blocked.

Everyone else can access the site, so it’s not down.

I can access the site from the PCs in my house, so it’s not an ISP issue.

I cannot access it from FTP, Firefox, Safari, or anything else on my Mac, so it’s not a browser issue.

I can access every other site I’ve tried, so it’s not an internet issue.

I’ve repaired permissions. I’ve rebooted several times.

What gives? Any ideas?

I just tried it on my brother’s computers on the SAME network. His PC could access it but not his Mac. So it appears isolated to Macs on this network.

I'm baffled.

What changed?

You got a url?

Not necessarily.

Where is the server?

I cannot access it from FTP, Firefox, Safari, or
anything else on my Mac, so it’s not a browser
issue.

Maybe the site only accepts Windows IE.

It's a networking problem or the site doesn't work with Mac computers.

Who built the site?

Use Network Utility and ping the server. This will see if you can communicate with the server.
Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Network Utility

Perhaps port 80 is blocked on your mac.

Thanks, guys.

I haven't installed any updates except for the most recent security update, and that was after the site started giving me problems.

I called my host for the site and everything is fine on their end.

It's not an IE thing. It's one of my websites running Word Press, and I've accessed it from Firefox before numerous times. Plus, I can't even access my ftp via Cyberduck.

How do I check port 80? And wouldn't that block other sites as well?

Hi megamoze!

What exactly is going on when you try to access your site? Are you getting a default error page (type), redirect, blank page (but URL appears in address bar), etc etc etc...

Not being able to access your FTP is quite alarming. I can't think of any reason other than username and password that you could not connect (or you have firewalled your Mac somehow). If you are using "Shared Hosting", you might try to ask your provider for another website hosted on same server/IP number and see if you can see that page on your Mac. If you have an IP number/~youraccount see if you can access your site that way. Also, if you have a "Control Panel" through your web host, can you access that?

Hi - I bought my new IMAC last week. A couple months back, when I was still using my old PC, I purchased a new website domain through Google (from BigDaddy.com). I started construction on my new website, but didn't finish because the PC was finished (tee hee!). Now on my IMAC, when I try to work on editing my website, Google Page Creator says it doesn't work with my web browser; It suggests I "download a new version of Firefox" or "Download a new version of Internet Explorer [Windows only.]" Trying to make this work, I've downloaded Firefox about 8 times (I just found all of them on my desktop!). But when I go back into Google Page Creator, it just keeps saying the same thing i.e. can't support browser, download Firefox.

P.S. I just can't find the correct section to "Post a new question," no matter how many parts of "Discussion" I look at....

Thank you very much!

The same thing happening to me. Did everything megamoze did.

Except no PC'S here. And it is the first time I've tried to access the site. Used Safari, Firefox, MSIE. Nothing accesses the site.

For the past three days, nothing. Only this message:

Safari could not open the page “ http://www.newyorklife.com” because the server stopped responding.

GHave followed all the posted advice and still no access.

Catagaie-
I just tested this with Firefox 2.0.0.3 and it works for me. I'm wondering if you've actually installed Firefox or are just running it from the mounted disk image. I say that because it's something lots of new Mac users trip up on. So...just in case:
Once the disk image mounts and you locate the Firefox application icon within it, drag the app icon to your Applications folder and launch it from there. Hopefully, you'll then have luck with Google Page Creator.

For the record, I was able to access http://www.newyorklife.com on Safari 2.04. Have your tried clearing your browsers' caches?

Cleared cache. Restarted. Used different browsers. Disabled Norton Auto Protect.

Still -

Safari:

"Safari could not open the page “ http://www.newyorklife.com/” because the server stopped responding."

Firefox:
"The connection has timed out. The server at www.newyorklife.com is taking too long to respond.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

MSIE
" A connection failure has ocurred."

"Disabled Norton Auto Protect."

When people have mysterious problems and also have Norton installed, that's where I'd look first. Norton hooks pretty deep into your system, and can be a bear to remove completely.

If it were me, I'd use the Norton Uninstaller to remove all traces of Norton software from my computer, if trying to resolve a mystery such as yours.

I'd substitute for using the Norton software by making sure the Apple firewall was on, and perhaps supplementing with ClamAV. If you have a hardware router, I'd make sure its firewall was active, too.

If it's anything like my problem, then it's not Norton as I don't have Norton on my Mac.

Also, other people were able to access my site and I was even able to access it from a PC.

And finally, it wasn't a cache issue because I couldn't access it from Cyberduck, Safari, Firefox, or any other web app. That site was simply gone.

It now works though. Still no clue what happened.

Have tried everything: - all the suggestions on this page, and from this thread too: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=755113&tstart=135

Using Asante FriendlyNet ethernet hub

Neither a G4 desktop or an iBook can connect to these sites:

<mainstayfunds>
http://206.210.18.59/
http://206.210.28.59/

<newyorklife>
http://206.210.18.33/
http://206.210.28.33/

My ISP provided the DNS information to try (oh, yeah, the ISP can access all the sites)

These actions were unsuccesful:

Three browsers
Bypassed hub and connected Mac to cable modem directly
Disconnected power from cable modem 2 minutes
Norton Firewall disabled
Used different hub port
Restarted
Signed out
Deleted Safari plists
Emptied Safari cache.
Deleted Safari cache folder
Dragged InputManagers from their folders
Repaired permissions
No Network Proxies enabled

TCP/IP setting of the computer is set to DHCP - obtaining IP
address and DNS server IP address automatically
