iBook G3 won't start-up

Hi all,

I'm having a frustrating problem with my G3 iBook - as with many other posters, it won't start-up at all. I have tried the shift-ctrl-option-power sequence, without any luck.

Some history - this is not the first time I have had the problem. The first time was about 2 months ago, whilst I was playing a game, having booted in MacOS9. The game froze during a loading operation, and I had to shutdown the computer. Having done a forced shutdown (power for 10 secs), the computer would not restart. I tried all of the usual fixes listed in article 14449, without any luck. Eventually, after having left the iBook unplugged for about a month, I tried to restart it, and it started just fine, except that the pram had been reset (date reset to 1904 etc...). The computer ran fine for about a week, in both OS X and OS 9, but the, I tried to run the game again, and once again it froze during a loading operation (not the same as previously...) Same result, nothing works to make the computer reboot.

The fact that the computer worked just fine again, and failed again doing the sme type of operation suggests to me that firstly there is a bug in the game, and that secondly there is probably nothing physically wrong with the computer, it's just that a pram setting has been scrambled so that the computer won't restart any more.

Is there any other way of resetting the power manager and/or pram on an iBook G3 800 MHz? Or is there another reset that might be applicable? Or is there something else that might be causing the problem?

Anyway, any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to have to wait a month for the charge to fade enough that whatever setting is scrambled resets...

Yes, the logic board problem had occurred to me, too. If you pick it up in your left hand and squeeze the case to the left of the trackpad, and that allows you to start up, that is indicative of a failed logic board.

Enough Dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from the logic board problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar, give Apple a call. If the iBook qualifies, it's a free fix.

You can find the original purchase date of the iBook, by entering its serial number into the box at the bottom of Apple's main support page under "About Your Support Coverage."

If it is past the three-year time limit, you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:

[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.

I'm wondering if my problem is related!
I have a 800MHz PowerPC G3 iBook running OS 10.3.9.
I am traveling in Brazil and was going to use my laptop to accomplish several tasks but can't because it won't boot up!
It started giving me garbage once it booted. Then it wouldn't boot at all. I read a few articles and did a Power Management reset. After that I was able to boot once and went into Disk Utilities and did a repair session. When I connected up my Ethernet cable I got garbage on the screen and have not been able to get a clean boot since.
Can anyone help me out? It'd be so nice to use my computer!

It sounds like the logic board could be the problem, all right. A garbled display is one of the symptoms of logic board failure.

What happens if you squeeze the case to the left of the trackpad and keep pressure on it there? Does that allow you start up and work briefly, as long as you keep pressure on the case? If so, follow the link and instructions above.

Hi Ronda,
I took advantage of the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program a couple of years ago and have not had as many problems since. However, I tried to start up my iBook earlier and just got beeping and intermittent lights. I tried the trick you mentioned (squeezing to the left of the trackpad), and it worked. Could this mean that my faulty logic board may have been replaced with another faulty logic board?

I also tried to put a Scotch mounting square on the video chip but it didn't work for long. When the Ibook was getting hot, the problem came back. I think that the mounting square was melting a bit when the Ibook was getting hot and that the shim was not thick enough anymore. So I tried to shim with a felt protector of 1.5 mm instead and the problem seems to be solved so far. Good luck !

Hello demallien.

I have the same computer than you.

My iBook 14" LCD 32 VRAM won't turn on.

Some minutes before this problem, I verified the hardware of my computer with CD Test Hardware. NO PROBLEM.

I turned OFF my iBook and it won't turn ON.

RESET POWER MANAGER

1)Shift-Control-Option-Power (where Power on keyboard?)
2)Wait 5 sec.
3)Press Power Button

ALWAYS WON'T TURN ON.
