No IEEE 1394 Host Controller Found

After struggling to update I Tunes (but being successful with guidance) I now cannot get a menu on my mini ipod.
I thus went to ITunes and did a diagnostic on the ipod. All is ok except for the ipod and I get an error message that says "No IEEE 1394 Host Controller Found". I went to the "help" section linked to the failure but the help section only said to redownload ITunes. After having so much difficulty getting that installed to begin with, and not really knowing or believing that is the problem, I'm wondering if there are options I can try.

Dell Dimension 4400; Dell Dimension 2400; and a Gateway M405 Laptop;, Windows XP

Well, I played around and did the following: updated Itunes on my laptap and then connected my "frozen" ipod to it since something is problematic with my windows desktop computer. It solved this problem. My Ipod registered on my laptap and ITunes diagnosed there was a problem. I chose restore and it was restored and updated with the latest software. So this problem is resolved but it is not resolved on my desktop. My Ipod does not register and I did what was suggested as far as the device manager. So, while I'm making progress, the problem with my desktop is not resolved.
