MacBook Pro does not boot

hello!

my mac book pro doesn't boot any more. if i press the start-button, the cd-drive sounds and the harddisc spinns up. the fans also start but the screen remains black. there is no startup sound and the white LED on the opening-button is lightet (doesn't blink - but is shining).

i tried a p-ram reset - wich didn't work and also a PMUreset wich didn't help... any ideas?

I have a similar problem. The MBP boots up as usual, then after a few minutes, the Apple logo disappears and I get a circle with a slash across it. Then nothing loads up. I've tried everything from resetting the PRAM and NVRAM to booting from the install disc with the Apple Hardware Test. Still nothing. I've even tried to do an install, while saving my previous settings, and it still won't let me. Short of doing a completely clean install, which I'm avoiding, what else can I do? Suggestions?

Thanks for any information!

Mine just crashed this morning---same as described in the posts. Apple logo came up and spinning wheel---nothing else. Took it in and they have to replace the hard drive, meaning I'm starting from scratch again after only nine months.

My wife and I really wanted a Mac, but this makes me think I made a mistake.

My laptop is having some of these symptoms as well!

Blank Screen
White LED ON
HDD Sounds like it's spinning
NO CHIME
USB Devices get powered on (ipod lights up if I hook it in)

It just stopped working all of a sudden after shutting down unexpectedly a few times.
I did the PRAM and all the other resets without any luck.
I am going to try to hook it up to a CRT via Mini DVI Connector to see if anything comes up. Has anyone found another solution to this? I have not installed memory of any kind or taken the unit apart for mods.

Just voicing a me too here. I let it sit (cool?) and it fires. I think the time taken to switch the ram chips cools it for those that post that. But I also think it might be a corrupt boot file of some sort. It happened once before. I did a disk permissions repair and all was well for about 2 weeks. Now I cannot install that firmware upgrade. I get a blank screen.

To be clear - other posts seem to have different symptoms - I have no apple, no nothing other than the sound of the drive spin up then just the gray screen.

You listening apple?

Ever since Leopard Friday, my Tiger formatted 17" MBP has been not booting properly. Weird. I've repaired permissions, I've run Disk Utility, I've zapped PRAM, I've reset the power management, I've tried everything. Sometimes it boots, sometimes it doesn't. I've been getting an aqua screen without the Apple logo as if the system folder can't be found or the ROM is not loading. (Last month I did do the firmware update--is this the problem?) Is my hard drive dying? I've run the Hardware tests and the HD tests and everything is okay. If I boot from the Installer Disk, and then do a restart, it usually boots from the HD but not always. I'm very annoyed. I just find it odd this all started happening the day Leopard was released. Coincidence? Ha! Anybody have a clue what's happening? I've also noticed that sometimes after being in sleep mode, it will be frozen and I need to do a hard restart. Help!

I installed Leopard for the TimeMachine function. Before installing I backed up most of my important data, but not all. Never had a problem with a hard drive or other major problem in the past 14 years of using Macs. Today, after two days of using Leopard without a problem, my computer started up, got the grey screen with apple logo and spinning loader. The screen goes blue for a blink of the eye then goes black like it is asleep. I can hear the hard drive respond to my tapping on keys and click pad, but the screen never comes back up. Please tell me that the hard drive is not bad. There was one file I missed and it is almost impossible to think of the ramifications of losing it. My wife just had a kid three days ago so I had other things on my mind, probably should not have upgraded yet, but damage done. Is there anything I can do...

My macbook pro will not start up on the mac side. I have boot camp installed and I am able to start up the computer on the windows side, but on the mac side I only get as far as the gray screen with the apple icon and spinning wheel. My battery is fully charged. I tried the PRAM reset without success. I hav en't installed anything new lately. My daughter left the computer on and fully drained the battery and since then I have had this problem. Any thoughts?

Yes I have the same problem, HD spins, white light comes on, cd drive and all, but only a black screen. It is an overheating problem I believe because if I let it sit for 30 minutes it will usually fire right up. It is a real pain when installing software that requires a restart. Has anyone heard an "official" response from Apple? If so could you let me know. They weren't very helpful when I had them on the phone.
Thanks
