Problem with card reader

I assume this is a USB card reader, are you using the USB port on the back of the iMac or on the wired keyboard (if you are using one)? It may be a power problem, the USB hub on the keyboard is not powered.

Even though it shouldn't matter, Have you checked Kingston's product page to see if it is Mac compatible?

Hi, I have the same problem. I am using a Sandisk 5 in 1 reader. It only works if I unplug it, insert a card and then plug it back in. If I try to insert a new card, I have to do the above procedure again. Tried to go into the back of the mac as well as a powered hub. Same problem.

I have an iMac 20 and my SanDisk reader will not read the Smart Media card...reads the CF card OK....anybody get this figured out? I had just installed the new Security Update.

I tried the reader in my Macbook Pro and it works fine...

I also have problems with my card readers. At first they worked fine ow they work sporadically. I have tried various brands, Sony, Apacer etc. to no avail. I have the same problem with Duo cards, SD's and Compact Flash cards. If I connect the camera directly the computer I can download he files but not thru the readers.

Has anyone found a solution..?

I have the same problem with the Kingston 15-in-1 reader: attempting to read a card disconnects the device.

I have this same problem with a generic 5 card reader and all my Sony memory sticks. I have 3 different sticks, and they all do the same thing. It work fine when plugged into a PC, just not on the mac, so it is not the card reader either. Very fustrating!

Just got off the phone with apple chat. They don't know either.

My card reader shows it is a generic reader under sys pref.

I've tried 3 different memory stick pro/cards, 1 sandisk, 1 lexar, 1 sony (a duo with an adapter), same problem. I have also tried it on the same iMac, just booted to my Windows XP partition w/boot camp and the card reader works just fine. This is what I have been doing to get the darn photos off the card lately. I also can reproduce the problem on my work iMac ;-(

..and it also happens on my powerbook g4, so its not just an intel thing. It acts up a bit differently as it just hangs, instead of disconnecting/unmounting itself.

Also happens under different users, this was one thing the chat reps had me try.

Just got off the phone with Apple phone support. They say that my card reader is not compatible with os X at all, and too bad. They told me the only one they can recommend buying is a Belkin. Sold in their stores.

Many readers besides belkin work in OS X. I have simpletech, GE, and Alcor Micro, amongst others. Personally, I think that the fewer card types a reader claims to support, the less trouble you will have, but that's just my opinion.

Have you resolved your problem yet? If so please enlighten me.

I have identical problem, when first purchased, my card reader connects to the iMac fine, now it won't, System Profiler sees the card reader, but that's all it, nothing else, not even DiskUtility sees it. Have tried different brand cards to no avail, and the same card reader and cards still connects to the old G3 Mac fine, looks like an iMac problem cause it works before unders same hardware and software.

I have the same problem too. (Aluratek, Multi-Media Card Reader, "MAC compatible")

First I thought it's the reader itself, so I exchanged it for another one.
Came home and tested the new one, problem still exist.

Now I'm thinking it's probably iMac's problem!!??

I've been doing a lot of Digital picture frames lately and have run into the .DS store problem where mac leaves a little bit'o'info behind that tends to throw the frames for a loop. Solved that with Blue Harvest or copying to Windows and downloading, but would like to get rid of my Win PC---so I'm looking for a good card reader that workds with OS 10.5.1. Any recommendations?
