Q: upgrading from a PowerMac 7100/66 running OS7.5 to a MacBookPro running OSX

I'm trying to load Sheepshaver 2.3 onto a MacBookPro running 10.4.9. I seem to have the app plus the Sheepshaver GUI app. Starting the GUI app works but, when I hit the start button, I get:
Sheepshaver error
Invalid ROM file size: Sheepshaver requires a 4MB PowerMac ROM.

I have the Mac OS ROM Update 1.0.smi in the same folder as the Sheepshaver apps. Thsi seems to be the thing necessary to get Sheepshaver working according to the download site.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

I also have a PowerPC 8200/120 running 8.6 but have never taken to using it, if this helps in anyway.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this.

IM

ps. Does anyone know why Apple didn't think of providing a fully working solution to getting old data and software to work on these intel machines?

What are you trying to accomplish?

If you just want to move your old files over, there are easier ways.

The .smi file can be used to produce a ROM file on a Mac that can use it, such as your 8200, but it is not a ROM file in a directly useable format. Do you already have a file named Mac OS ROM in the System Folder on your 8200?

'I'm trying to load Sheepshaver 2.3'

What are the system requirements for Sheepshaver? Apple leaves it up to developers to update their software to meet new hardware options, not the other way around. Typically, Apple provides backwards compatibility but that also means that developers must have followed guidelines explicitly for the backwards path to work. Even then, it is not a perfect world.

Given the system requirements of the software in question, we can look for work-around options.

I am hoping to access my old files from my 7100.

I've done the moving- success in part!

No file named Mac OS ROM on the 8200.

    Prerequisites to run SheepShaver:

    *
    You need a rom file
    *
You need a supported Mac OS on cd
    *
    You need the SheepShaver program

The 7100 has an Ethernet port, and you can set up an Ethernet network by installing a used US$5 RJ-45 twisted pair transceiver in the AAUI-15 port marked with the <_> symbol.

The 8200 has that same AAUI-15 port AND a "regular" RJ-45 twisted-pair Ethernet port.

Many thanks for that. I have transferred data and programmes from the 7100 to the 8200 and then on to the MacBookPro. My problem is getting the MacBookPro to open the data files which includes lots of ClarisWorks 4 letters and spreadsheets as well as MiniCad 6 drawings. I have yet to attempt Eudora 1.4 emails.

I've found that iWork '06 trial version can't translate old ClarisWorks files but at least I can use TextEdit to read the basic text after all the headings, however TextEdit can't deal with old ClarisWorks spreadsheets.

My hope is to run at least some of the old programmes under Sheepshaver so that I can extract data when needed.

Sorry if this is a bit long winded.

By the way, on the MacBookPro, I have a file called Mac OS ROM in the system folder of the PPC disc image for OS 8.5. However this is 1.8Mb and Sheepshaver seems to want a 4Mb file. Clicking the Install Mac OS 8.5 file in the disc image folder gives a response 'You cannot open the application '''' because it is not supported on this system.'

The current version of ClarisWorks, now known as AppleWorks 6, is available new from the Apple Store for US$79 including US Shipping. It runs under 8.1 and later, including Mac OS X.

Use CopyROM 2.1 by Phillip 'PC' Cummins to grab the ROM off the old Mac. Check that the file size is the correct 4MB.

    Transfer to intel Mac.

Sheepshaver starts. Follow advice from http://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3179.

Remember to clean the OS disc or it won't read properly.

    Good luck.
