1.1.3 software won't update...

It asks me if I want to download 1.1.3, I say download and install... The software downloads all the way and right when it finishes I get an error message saying

"There was a problem downloading the iPod software for the iPod "(name)". An unknown error occured (-48).

Then it tells me to make sure my network settings are correct and that my internet connection is active... which they both clearly are, as I'm typing this right now. I've tried restoring, tried setting my LAN to detect automatically, tried changing from a dynamic to a static IP and back, tried reinstalling iTunes, I'm quite out of ideas.

The error messgae in the article deggie referred might not be the exact same one as yours, but both those kinds of errors are somewhat related, so the technique in the article is worth a try. (I have seen a recent spike in the updating or restoring -48s, rather than syncing, but I'm not sure what is causing them.)

Okay, let's try something different.

With your iPod disconnected (and iTunes closed), try switching your firewall and antivirus/antispyware settings to OFF. (Whatever security software you use, it doesn't matter).

Close the program, and launch iTunes. Then, when iTunes has loaded up, connect your iPod.

Try updating your iPod's software, and see if you still get that -48 when updating.

By the way, I've got a couple of questions:

What option did you choose when attempting to update your iPod? "Download & Install", or "Download Only"? Also, is the software already downloaded onto your computer, and then you got the -48?

I can't be too sure, but I'm figuring, in your case, that:

- You had "Download and Install" selected when you attempted to update your iPod, and:
- The download was mostly complete, perhaps with only 1 MB left to download, when you got the -48 error message.

Am I anywhere close in my guess, or no? Also, if you can remember any other details when you first tried updating your iPod's firmware, perhaps info on when you got the -48, etc, that would help.

Now I'm thinking that this is not an Internet connection issue (since you are able to get most of your update), but something that might be along the lines of the causes of a 1418 error when updating or restoring an iPod, which usually is a USB-related kind of error.

This is the generic article for a 1418 error (which is not what you are getting, of course, but try the techniques mentioned):

Error 1415, 1417, 1418, or 1428: Cannot restore or update iPod in iTunes 7 or later

Keep us posted if it helps, or not.

hmmmmmmm.

let's try sending an updater log to the Apple Engineers for a look.

Open this folder:

C:\Documents and Setings\yourusername\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Updater Logs

(You may need to show hidden files in order to see the Application Data folder. Open up My Computer, and in the Tools menu, choose "Folder Options..." Then go to the View tab, and then in the "Advanced settings", select "Show hidden files and folders.")

Send the files inside the iPod Updater logs folder as attachments to this email address.

in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:

- A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
- The username you are using in the thread
- The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
- the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
- A concise description of the issue you are seeing
- The exact text of the error message you are seeing

I have messed with this error code for the past week and could not get anything to go until I tried this link!
There was a problem downloading the iPod software for the iPod "ipod". an unknown error occurred (-48) make sure your network settings are correct and your network connections is active or try again later.
The only thing that worked for me was to follow this link.

Thanks for this, I was ready to toss this thing!
