Can't Send e-mail with new Road Runner connection
IMacG5 Mac OS X (10.4.3)
The keychain is where the computer stores all of the
passwords (among a few other things) you told it to
remember. When Finder is showing in the menu bar,
click the Go menu and select Go to Folder. In the Go
to Folder box type the following and press Return:
~/Library
Look for a folder called Keychains. While holding
the Option key on your keyboard, drag the Keychains
folder to your Desktop. This will create a backup
copy of your Keychain folder on your Desktop.
Now make that Keychain message appear and allow it to
do what it's asking. If it messes anything up (and I
don't think it will) you can always drag the Keychain
folder from your Desktop to ~/Library and tell it to
overwrite the new files.
If you want some help troubleshooting the actual Mail
issue, then it would help if you could type any error
messages in here exactly as they appear on your
screen.
Hi, Thank you for answering my e-mail. The actual
message that I get states "Mail has been updated. Do
you want to allow the new version to access the same
keychain items (such as passwords) as the previous
version? This change is permanent and affects all
keychain items used by mail."
If I hit don't change
it then it asks me for the password for account
smtp.mac.com. When I enter my password it will not
accept it. I used to get my mail from my .Mac account
but I did not renew .Mac again. Now I want to get my
mail and be able to send my mail from my Road Runner
account. I have been using AOL as my e-mail account.
Since I do not know what I am doing and it will not
accept my password I am concerned I will really get
myself into trouble. Thank you for your help.
Linda
What this message tells me is you installed a new OS
X update that changed the Mail application some way.
For security reason, the OS wants to make sure that
the change is something you wanted done. In this
case it's completely safe to allow it to change the
keychain. See if that corrects the problem.
The only time it wouldn't be is when you are positive
that no new updates have been installed, and that you
have not manually installed some software that might
affect the program in question.
it's probably best to check your outgoing mail server
info with Roadrunner.
Open Mail, cancel any error messages, then click the
Mail menu next to the blue apple. Underneath it
click on Preferences. In the Preference window click
the Accounts icon at the top. In the Accounts
preferences make sure the affected account is
highlighted blue on the left. Att he bottom on the
right side, click the button that says Server
Settings.
Now call your ISP and ask them what those settings
should be. ISPs are typically scared of Macs, so you
may have to treat them like scared child. 🙂 Just
let them know you're looking at your outgoing mail
server settings right now and want to confirm you've
entered the correct settings. Then read what it says
in there to them. If they tell you to change it,
then change it.
Let us know how it goes. 🙂
The only thing that really concerns me about changing the
keychain is since it will not accept my password now and if I
click to change it then I will not be able to get back into anything
on my computer.
I can send e-mail from the mail account from Apple which I think is strange.

Sorry but you've lost me with this. Does this mean
your .Mac account which has expired?
I'm also a RoadRunner customer and I access my
RoadRunner email account with the Mail application
with no problems. I also have a .Mac account and I
used RoadRunner's SMTP server to send messages with
my .Mac account when connected to the internet via RR
when at Home.
What is the exact error message provided when trying
to send a message with your RR email account and SMTP
server?
What settings are you using for RR's SMTP server -
all settings?
Hi, I do not receive an error message when I try to
compose an e-mail when I am in RR web mail. It just
shoots a blue line across the internet address on top
and nothing happens. I can e-mail when I go into the
mail icon on my desktop which I guess is a apple
program and when I sent a test e-mail to another
e-mail address it showed it coming from my RR
address.
When I spoke to the woman at apple about my
problem she had me discard my keychain that was in my
folder. Now I get an error message that says "A
keychain cannot be found to store Safari. Then it
tells me to either cancel of reset to defaults. I am
not sure what to do about that.
So from what it sounds like, you can send and receive
email just fine when you click the Mail icon in the
Dock (that's the bar with all the icons that is
usually at the bottom of your screen). When you send
email from in the Mail program, and someone receives
it, it shows as coming from your Roadrunner account.
If I understand, you are also saying that you do not
get an error message about sending (or receiving)
emails from the Mail program. Is that all correct?
I think we've all gotten confused as to what exactly
it is you need assistance with. Sometimes that
happens when we're trying to help numerous people.

If that was all she had you do, then she's missed a
few steps. I can walk you through exactly how to fix
that but I want to make sure I understand the full
extent of what's going on before I do that.
I'm sure eventually we can get this sorted out for
you. 🙂
