Colored vertical lines on PB 17" display

There is a lot of documentation on various websites and discussion boards about 17" Powerbooks with displays that break down after about 15 months of use.

I am unfortunate enough to own a 17" powerbook assembled in April 2005 in China - serial number beginning with W8. I believe this is the same time-period and factory location where hundreds (if not thousands) of identical machines were assembled that are now having the same colored-lines-in-the-display defect as my machine.

All these machines assembled at the same time, at the same place, using the same batch of LCD screens, are experiencing the same defect after the same amount of use.
Something stinks, and it smells like a manufacturing problem to me.

Does anyone know if Apple has man'd up and acknowledged the problem yet?

meanwhile I'm writing this reply, my 17" PB (of course, an W8 serial number) is increasing his number of VL.

Thanks a lot, people of Apple. Everyday you are becoming more and more in the Bill Gates way of doing things. Are you going to start a Fundation too? Are you going to put your huge profits in some noble cause in order to clean your reputation? In that case, I'll pay the repair with pleasure!
But please, tell me the true cause and charge me the real price!

hi matthew,

i didn't contact any magazines yet, aber falls du unterstützung brauchst melde dich einfach nochmal hier.

due to a lack of alternatives i'm now using a 17" macbook pro and praying it won't get similar defects after its warranty has ended.
this will finally slow down the process of getting additional defect lines on the powerbook display. sort of an expensive solution though.

Thought I add another powerbook to the list. It's about 3 1/2 yrs old with a W84.... Serial number. The screen just went to bunch of vertical lines thru it this morning it. It still works and you can see the desktop but its like looking thru a screen - not sure its worth fixing.
Any one get your's fixed? What did they charge and where - I'm seeing $600 to $900. I'm assuming the LCD screen is bad but could be a bad board or cable - you think at least Apple would tell us what the fixes are - there appears to be more then one problem with these displays - I'm using my old imac and the 15 inch LCD display is perfect still (over 5 yrs old). I'd post a picture but can't seem to figure out how .... my wife uses the powerbook, looks like she may get a macbook for mother's day - we're cub fans, the lovable losers - we're also Apple fans which fits in nicely .....
