screen is blank but it lights up

As of yesterday, I'm having the same problem with my Nano that you described.

The music continues to play, the display lights, up, etc.; everything works, but the display is blank.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this- short of sending it to Apple- I would appreciate it. My 1-year warranty expired less than 2 weeks ago.

Have you tried resetting your iPod? To reset an iPod:

First, toggle your iPod's "Hold" switch back and forth a couple of times. (Be sure to leave it on the white side of the switch, which is the OFF position).

Then, press and hold the Menu and Select (center) buttons together for 5-10 seconds.

You may need to try this several times before it works for you in any way. For more effect, you could try connecting your iPod to a power source (like your computer, or a wall charger, if available) while you reset it.

Yeah, I had actually tried both restoring and resetting... nothing changes. Everything still functions normally (music plays, etc.), but the display is just blank. So, I think there must be some deeper technical issues that need servicing.

Apple is sending me an envelope.

phil how did you get around having to pay? everytime I go to the service website and go through the process they say it'll be at least 100$ when i'm having the exact same problem as you. did you approach it in a different way?

i have the same problem...
i have a line at the side of the screen...
when i plug it in to my computer...it doesnt even light up anymore

We just had the same problem with our nano. How did you get in touch with Apple? If mine is still under warranty, will they cover the repair? Thanks!

Yeah, if it's like mine they'll cover the repair.

I only had to pay shipping & handling.

no, its up by about 2 months but phil said he was out of warranty and only had to pay shipping and handling i thought
