using mac pro as media server for ps3

You can use Eyeconnect from Elgato (www.elgato.com). There is a trial version available for download. Don't forget to open the port 2170 in your firewall.
The PS3 will automatically find your Mac. For me it worked like a charm.

You can also use Allegro Media Server 1.02. It supports DLNA according to the release notes.

I downloaded El Gato's EyeConnect, but I wasn't very successful. It only periodically found my Mac, and when it did, I could browse my library, but I couldn't play anything.

Anything in iTunes was said to be unsupported, and anything in EyeTV started to play but then I would get a message saying the file is corrupted. But it's not b/c I can play it in EyeTV.

I don't mean to hijack the post, but if this original poster were to try this he/she may have the same problem.

BTW, EyeConnect (if you can get it to work) is much better than the other solution posted because it will stream both video and music.

Now I didn't say I'd TRIED it. 🙂 I have however, tonight, tried EyeConnect. Was able to get it to stream all my iTunes just fine (artwork doesn't show) and could see all my Video_TS and eyeTV shows but NONE of them would play on the PS3. Said unsupported for everything I threw at it. MPEGS, Divx, Video_TS, Disk Image files, etc...

EyeConnect mentions issues with Sony's HomeLink in the Read Me files so I'm assuming the PS3 is using some of that.

Ok, EyeConnect worked for me - I tried only iTunes. But I think it often depends on your home network structure.

There is also another alternative commercial solution - TwonkyMedia Server, which supports Xbox360 and PS3. I didn't try it, but maybe it's worth it.

Oh, one more thing. I also tried pictures with EyeConnect and they worked fine. So getting music and pictures is no problem... Video is the issue.

There is lots of other issues with PS3 video, even though its' supposed to support H264 and MPEGS actually using them is another thing altogether. The PS3 won't even play a trailer downloaded from Apples Quicktime site. <rolleyes> I guess that will come with a later OS update. Other than this the Sony 1.80 update rocks. The AppleTV has some real competition if the PS3 gets it's glitches ironed out.

And I agree, if I can get this to work, there's no reason for me to buy the AppleTV! Which is a very good thing for me, since I just plopped down a crazy amount of cache on this Mac Pro!

Check your firewall settings. I'm behind a LinkSYS router/firewall so i don't even turn mine on. Been ok these last 2 decades or so... I ddid open up the ports on the LinkSys though as each port is switched.

I know what you mean by mp4 & H264 issues.

EyeConnect works fine with iTunes, iPhoto and any image files networked to PS3 but vid seems to be the problem.

There were different error messages after selecting a vid file. 'Corrupt File', 'Unsuported Data' or 'Connection to media server could not be established'.

Even copied a playable mg4 file from the PS3 to the Mac, then EyeConnected back. Wouldn't play or even download!

I'm wondering if it's a wireless bandwidth problem. Yet to try ethernet.

If they/I get it all sorted I can't see any reason to buy an aTV with it's low rez HD.

there must be more to it than that...i loaded eyeconnect and the ps3 couldn't find any media server....i even opened the one port someone mentioned. anyhow, if it works that apple comes out and explains what to use to make the mac show up as a media server it will be great, but given its a threat to appletv not sure they'll do that??

any suggestions on getting this ps3 thing to work is helpful...airport extreme (811g), and iMac intel...ps3 and iMac are wireless.

I am waiting for a reply from EyeConnect support.
The PS3 update being so new I'm not sure how helpfull they'll be.

As mentioned I get the same errror messages but only with vid (EyeTV & mp4's).

All my imported iTunes audio files are AAC. I did notice if I tried to play purchased music it came up with the 'Can't find Media Server' message. A DRM issue?

I'm thinking it could be a open or port forwarding/or firewall issue on my router. Anyone tried a direct ethernet or airport Mac to PS3 connection without a router?

Also have you enabled UPaP on the PS3 & Router?

On my Belkin VoIP (4 port ethernet + wireless 11g) it's under 'Advanced Setup/UPaP'. I can only 'Enable' or 'Disable'.

UPaP = Universal plug and play.

The PS3 update only mentions 'DLNA' but in my PS3 'internet settings' I can only enable UPaP. I read on another discussion to enalble 'DLNA' - I'm an Aussie on PAL and it an't there. Different names for the same thing, USA vers AU version? Or does PS3 check my router 1st?

You should be able to access your router through Safari.

Try 'http://10.1.1.1/'

If that doesn't work you can find the router address (URL) from under the 'Apple menu' - 'About this Mac/More Info/Network' (easy way to the 'System Profiler' App).

You may need a password. Usually 'admin' or check docs that came with Router.
You may want to change this password once your'e in there. Not too secure.
