"what is my options? i really need to get the big file to my external harddrive, how can i do that?"

How big is that folder full of images? Say if it's almost 7GB then make a "new folder" and move half or under 3.5GB of images to the new folder. Say if it's 10GB make 2 "new folders" and split the images to about 3.3GB in each folder. Then copy the smaller folders to your External HD!
or
Move everything to your Internal HD and reformat the External HD. If there is not enough space left on your Internal HD for everything then, another way would be if you had access to a second properly formatted External HD, copy everything to it, then reformat yours and copy everything back.

If you have a large DMG file, you can split it into several dmgpart files. That is a good way to backup your data.

Are you sure this was an error message and not just the prompt window leading you to the next step of the process? What happened when you chose yes to convert and then split the file?
