Media Server Support for PS3?

I know that I can share my library; but does (or will) iTunes support DLNA Media Server functionality over a network? I've been forced to install Windows Media Player to access my files on my PS3...and I feel so DIRTY!

Help me cleanse myself of this Microsoft filth!

I just solved this problem for myself last night!

You must be running Windows Vista Home Premium, Enterprise, or Ultimate with all updates as of 5/25/07 installed. You just need to have Windows Media Player 11 installed (most of the time this is automatically done). When you navigate to Music on the Xross Media Bar (XMB), your PS3 should scan your network automatically devices on the network.

Make sure your User->Music->iTunes->iTunes Music folder is shared with at least all user read accesss w/ no password protection. If your PC name doesn't appear with a white WMP11 square next to it, you should be able to browse for your PC over the network. Once you have your PC selected, navigate through Music-> and all playable songs will be ready to play however you want to organize them!

NOTE: Supported formats for PS3 right now are .mp3, .wmv, and ATRAC-3, so if you (like me) need to convert your ENTIRE library from .aac to .mp3, it could take a while . . .

2ND NOTE: You can access your PC's music library through your PS3 then through your PSP through RemotePlay! Enjoy listening to your music anywhere you can get wireless internet access anywhere in the world! Any questions or comments feel free to email me sesshoumaru4b@gmail.com

Windows Media Player 11 has DLNA Media Server functionality built into it (which is what allows my PS3 to see the files.)

My problem is that I love iTunes and hate Windows Media Player. In addition to that, even though my music seems to share fine, I cannot access my photos and movies (yes, they are in formats readable by my PS3.)

So, to get back to the original question, does (or will) iTunes support DLNA Media Server functionality?

MrMatt,

The key to this is finding software that supports DLNA Media Server functionality (this is not an operating system thing.) Windows Media Player 11 is but one piece of software with this support. If you can find one that runs on your Mac, you're golden.

I believe that Nero 7 Ultra Edition has this functionality. Unfortunately, I think it only comes in Windows and Linux flavors...sorry. 😟

No, he's saying that he added the files from his iTunes directory into his Windows Media Player 11 library, enabled sharing for that library, and then accessed that library from his PS3.

This is exactly what I am doing now...but it has little to do with my initial question. WMP11 ***** (that's my opinion, at least), so I'm trying to cut it out of the picture altogether. My hope is that someone knows of a way to get iTunes to do this all on its own...which is looking doubtful.

I have never used WMP11 (nor will I hopefully) to play music. I've checked all the settings and my library in WMP11 is empty. Just having the WMP11 setup must be allowing the PS3 to access the music I normally play with iTunes. I'd suggest downloading WMP11 for PC and set it all up, then give your PS3 another shot.

My PS3 accesses all my pictures and videos as well because I have them in shared folders on my network.
