PLEASE HELP WITH SCC!!

I'm just completely baffled at why the SCC files aren't working properly with my dvd. I'm checking the DVD on a progressive player. Is there a problem with that? I have adjusted all of the start times of my mpegs to co-inside with the SCC files provided by the captioning department. Show 1 part 1 for example has a start timecode of 01.00.01.04 in the SCC file. On my mpeg I have made that start at the same timecode. However, when I play the DVD on a progressive DVD, the first sentence is missing off of the caption. I have reset the track offset to 00.00.00.00 because my asset has the proper start time. Can anyone please help me as my client is breathing down my neck to get these 3 DVDs done. Thanks so much. A phonecall would be great because then you could walk me through it..714-932-2006

Ohhh...Also, on parts 3 and 4 the CC is way off! The CC comes on before any VO and it doesn't start with the proper text either. I adjusted the start timecodes in FCP before I exported the MPEG 2 to match the SCC file so I have no idea why it's getting so screwed up. Thanks!

1. are you sure the starting timecodes of your assets are being modified? Changing the startign timecode of the sequence in FCP will not necessarily carry all the way through to the mpeg encoding process.

2. might there be a mismatch between the timecode formats of your SCC data and the assets? If your asset is getting encoded as drop-frame, and the original SCC data was generated for a non-drop master, your asset will not have certain frames, for instance 01:01:00;00, that might be in the captioning data file.

This can also result in unexpected offsets and drift between the caption and the program, which often increase as the starting timecode of the asset gets higher.

This might be hard to check, since the SCC file will be in hexadecimal, which, I don't know about you, but I find extrememly diffculy to read. But if the master you captured from using FCP was identical to the one used for the captioning, you should be able to check whether the clips are drop or non-drop in FCP. If you find you have put ndf clips in a df timeline, you'll have to re-encode, but it should work better.

But why would some of the show parts line up and be fine and only a couple are way off? It doesn't make sense.

When the timing of the captions goes off, does iit stay that way for the rest of the track, or do later portions of the track wind up captioned correctly?

Well the timing gets screwed up from the beginning. It comes on too early and leaves out the first half sentence then it's messed up the rest of that particular track.
