How to delete items from "bookmarks" menu?

How to delete items from "bookmarks" menu?

Apple help says select then delete, but that doesn't work. I need to delete bookmarks from my bookmarks menu. I know how to delete items from the bookmarks bar (those that show up on the top of Safari) but how to delete the ones that spill over to the right-side drop-down menu?

iBook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hi
Clicking on the book icon to open the Bookmarks window, you can drag any bookmark to the trash.
For your sub menus in the Bookmarks bar, with bookmarks window open, click on the bookmarks bar, move over to the next window, click on the triangle to open any one with a menu, and drag that item to the trash.
