Applications suddenly start crashing—on several computers!

Just had a call from our Singapore office crying for help: their FinalCut Pro and PhotoShop, on two of their Macs, have suddenly begun to crash on launching. Just as I got the call, my own FCP suddenly began refusing to open projects with the "General Error (41)" message. Repairing Permissions didn't help but just updated to FCP 5.1.4 and that solved the FCP problem. But any clues as to why this is happening to PhotoShop?
