Can my iMac G3/500 support OS X?

I believe this is the equivelant to my iMac; the Apple iMac G3/500 DV SE (Summer 2000) Specs (M7651LL/A*). I'm not in front of computer now. Can that support OS X? A store clerk told me no. Thanks!

iMac, Mac OS 9.0.x

Welcome To  Discussions Paineda!

Is this iMac (Summer 2000) - Technical Specifications your model?
If so, if it is still at Original Factory Specs, as it is, it may not be capable, but could be upgraded.

Here are the System Requirements for;

Jaguar System Requirements
-Power Mac G3 or G4, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 or G4, or iBook computer
-128MB of physical RAM
-Supports all video cards shipped by Apple on Mac OS X-compatible systems. Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video cards: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, GeForce3, GeForce4 MX, or GeForce4 Ti; Any AGP-based ATI RADEON card. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required.
-QuickTime Pro functionality requires a QuickTime 6 Pro key. The QuickTime 5 Pro key will not work after this software is installed.
-DVD Player requires a DVD-ROM equipped Macintosh with built-in FireWire.

Panther System Requirements
Additional Panther System Requirements

Tiger System Requirements.

Has your iMac been modified to meet any of those?
Note the amount of RAM is the minimum, and more is always better.

"Okay, thank you. If it's original specs, do you know approximate costs to upgrade the RAM?"

I've nearly given up buying Mac RAM from brick-n-mortar stores and have used Data Memory Systems for about four years and have been very pleased with their products, price and service. I've never had to make a return for any reason (I have no connection to the firm other than as a customer). There are also other good on-line RAM vendors.

Your iMac has two RAM slots and one now contains some RAM. Your computer probably shipped with either 64MB or 128MB. Each slot can hold up to a 512MB RAM module for a total of 1GB RAM. OSX likes a lot of RAM.

You can add one 256MB stick and have either 320MB or 384MB total, which should be adequate for basic OSX usage like word processing, surfing and mailing. If you do a significant amount of photo editing, you may want to order a 512MB module.

The source I list above shows G3 iMac RAM here. A 256MB module is US$27 and installs in minutes.
