APC UPS Configuration

I am getting lots of mixed messages from Apple and APC as how to configure a UPS (2200) to communicate with both the Xserve and Xserve RAID. I purchased a network card for the UPC and APC is telling me to install their Powerchute Network Shutdown software but it is dated 2003. Does anyone know if this is safe to use with 10.4.8 and the Intel Xserve?

I also have a serial cable connected between the RAID and the UPS. I have a USB cable that will connect between the Xserve and the UPS but I have read that I cannot use both the serial cable and USB cable at the same time. Can anyone verify this? If I can use both, it would allow me to use the settings in Energy saver and not crappy APS software.

Thanks, Bill

Powerchute Network Shutdown is safe to use. It's a simple little UNIX command line utility that receives shutdown commands from the UPS network card. Because the UPS network card communicates with the Server via ethernet, that's why you install Powerchute Network Shutdown, you don't need to connect the UPS to the server using the USB port. That frees the serial port to be used with the Xserve RAID.

By the way, APC released an update last week to the firmware for the APC 9617/8/9 network card. AOS 3.5.5, SUMX 3.5.5.

Looks like it's primarily for the new DST change dates (rather than having to enter the dates as custom).
