iBook overheating?

My iBook (14" G4 1.2Ghz 2 years old, no warranty) periodically shuts itself off.....but only when sleeping with the power adapter plugged in. When I open the lid it has clearly turned itself off and yet the computer is still quite hot. There is no smoke. The battery is not hot at all. The heat is primarily on the back left quadrant.

When this happens it will not start back up when I press the power button until it cools back down. Takes about 5-10 minutes after it is unplugged.

The computer functions perfectly otherwise. It never shuts down during use, only when asleep.

The computer is stored on a flat surface with the rear vents unobstructed.

I am obviously concerned. Is this a serious problem? Is it a fire hazard? Why does it stay hot as long as it is plugged in? (In other words, it goes to sleep when I close the lid and will be hot six hours later. It only cools when it gets unplugged.) Could this be related to the AC adapter?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks Nigel. I checked my battery at the original recall and it does not qualify. Also, the battery itself does not get hot at all. Not even warm really.

Would a defective battery cause other parts of the computer to overheat?

In any case, I've downloaded a freeware program called Temperature Monitor that has a history function. I'm hoping to catch one of these episodes so I can tell exactly what is heating up. Its a nifty little program:

Anyone else have any ideas or had a similar experience? Remember, it only happens while its asleep and plugged in. As soon as it cools off, it can be started back up and works perfectly.
