Can I convert .band to .mp3?

i'm searching everywhere, brand new to macs

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.9), new mac user

No. At least not directly. .band is the suffix that is used for GarageBand projects. If you open the project, and then Share it to iTunes, then convert it within iTunes to an .mp3 file, then, yes, you can.

.band is a Garageband project package it can only be used by garageband. To make a mp3 click share >send to itunes this will make a .aiff and use itune or another app to convert to mp3.
