Still problems with whining?

I bought mine a few weeks ago (a week before the newly updated MacBook came out). The whine is still there. Just try to block it out and don't use it in really quiet spaces.

I know, it's hard, but you'll get used to it when you stop paying attention to it. Sometimes I still hear it when I'm studying or at a lecture/seminar. I don't let it get to me. It shouldn't stop you from getting a new MacBook in my opinion.

Ps: I don't know if the whine still exists in the latest MacBook update.

The whining is still there. It has to do with the 2nd core on the Core Duo processor. I would say to just deal with it. Anything is worth not using Windows again!

They probably just don't hear it as much. The ones with the Power PC processors may not have this whine be evident. I had to exchange my first MacBook due to some major performance issues. I also complained about the whining. I forced my Apple store to allow me to open the replacement, as well as listen to some of the ones on display. Unfortunately, they all had the whine. Granted, some were a bit louder than others, but it is there. Unfortunate for me, I hear at exceptionally high frequencies for some reason. However, I managed to get used to it. I am in the electronics business and I swear, no matter how hard I try to find one, everything is going to have a flaw one way or another. Reading all the other problems that people have had on this forum, I am more than happy to accept this minor issue that most of the MacBooks have, than endure some of other issues that I have seen others experience. I suggest you do the same.

2.16 Intel Core Duo MacBook (Black) Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I haven't come across a Macbook that didn't whine when idle (5 in total). I too had my logic board replaced - and whine still here. Its not the Core Duo or Core2Duo design flaw - rather the OSX that due to throttling down the CPU causes it to whine.
If you tried using windows XP through Bootcamp - you will discover that the CPU whine is COMPLETELY eliminated there. The battery life isn't as good - but when you're woking in quiet environment - its worth it.

I do most of my internet searching on Windows XP when in a quiet room.

only had a macbook for 2 days now and have been using it alot and have had no signs of a whine!
is it likely for a whine to develop?

yeh its a white 2.16Ghhz 2gb ram with 120gd harddrive. is this problem with the new model or the previous model?

I know you're mainly curious about "new" Macbooks and the whining issue, but I thought I'd throw it out there that my Core Duo Macbook and the one I had before it (and returned due to a bad trackpad) both have not had any whine. If I get close to the keyboard I can hear some sizzling noise or a little hum, but that's only within a couple inches of the computer. I have pretty sensitive hearing and can't say that I ever hear a peep from my Macbook. Just thought I'd share my experience.

From my personal opinion after being on these boards for a year, I think that a lot of people have a "me too" complex. Somone reports that they have an issue with their computer and a couple other people who wouldn't have considered it an issue, or didn't look for it, now notice that their computer does it too! I've read quite a few posts like that. On the other hand, their are a lot of people with genuine issues as well. Like I mentioned earlier, my inital Macbook had a bad trackpad, plus a bowed keyboard. This one had the top case discoloration, but it's all good now. Keep in mind that this site exists solely for people to vent and find answers, and that most people with no problem don't come here. That said, I think the whining issue is a lot less severe than you might be inclined to believe.

If you're happy with your current Macbook (and you should be, mine is still really quick), then why throw the dice again?

Ah, didn't see that you had sent in your Macbook. Sorry. And for the record, I'm not saying you're one of the people that I was talking about. Just letting you know that there are some people like that out there.

As for the whining being an issue with only the C2D Macbooks, it's definitely not. It started with the Core Duo models and was something that a lot of people initially complained about. Everyone was hoping that the issue would go away with the upgrade to C2D, and it didn't..but it seems like it's gotten better. Better meaning that it seems like less people are talking about it 🙂

Like you said, it does seem like it's still a potential dealbreaker, just like the "sparkly" displays on the MBP. I was considering upgrading to either a new Macbook or a MBP (long story), but I can't decide if it's worth it to risk giving up a relatively problem-free life on my Macbook.
