PLEASE HELP!!! Tried to transfer Ipod library formatted with Mac to win.
I followed all the directions on how to move your music library on this site and now when I plug my ipod into my new computer it says the disk needs to be formatted, it wont let me open my ipod or see whats in it? How do I get my music library out of it, it says if i format it I will lose everything? Please help!!
If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay for instance gets good reviews and has the added functionality to let you copy your songs back to iTunes. Once you have your songs saved to the PC you can go ahead and restore the iPod for Windows. You can get XPlay at this link: XPlay 2
Assuming your stuff is all on your Mac and not just on the iPod. Install iTunes on the windows machine, if not already there. Plug in the iPod and go ahead and let the windows version of iTunes format it and set it up. Now configure it for Manual updating. Eject it. Plug it into the Mac. It should show up fine since Macs can read DOS formatted iPods. NOW start putting all your music on the iPod to trasnfer to the Windows machine. Patrick
In that case your only options are to crack open the wallet and pay for the Windows software that will let you read Mac formatted drives or lose all your music on your iPod. The second should be fine since I am sure everything on your iPod is from CDs you legally own.... riiiiight? and can be reimported? Patrick
I just did this today sort of. You'll need to do the following...
1. Download MacDrive (google it) trial. The iPod is in Mac format which is why your Windows PC can't see it.
2. Install MacDrive and restart.
3. The iPod will appear as a regular old USB external drive. Now you can go through the iPod and its folders and get your music off it. I'd put it in the iTunes Music Library folder under My Music.
4. You'll have to redo your playlist and reformat and resync your iPod.
