Remote Control Your MacBook

Hey All,

Since MacBook's come with an Apple remote does that mean that have Infrared sensor built it? If so, is it possible to control your mac (for movies/music) with a universal remote control?

I was watching a program off my MacBook using my TV the other day and found it annoying to switch back and forth between the apple remote and my universal remote (also the apple remote is extremely small and easy to lose). Would it be possible to program my universal remote for simple features like play/pause/volume control?

Though not a direct answer to your question I thought this would be worth mentioning. Yesterday at church a gentelmen had a logitec remote to switch slides for his mac (for song lyrics in church) and he used it from across the church. So if 3rd parties (this one was logitec) are making remotes that work then there is a good shot that a universal one could be possible.

It depends on what kind of universal remote you have.

I can confirm that the Logitech Harmony 880 works perfectly with both the MacBook and MacBook Pro...and every other component in my home theater system. The Harmony is pricey but it's an absolutely amazing remote.

If you already have a 'full learning' remote, it may just be a matter of programming it properly.

I would really suggest you start a new topic all of your own. Your question is not exactly related to "remote control" but rather video set-up. With that said, I would include some more specific information about the types of connections your TV or receiver will accept. DVI? HDMI? RCA? Digital optical audio? The solutions will depend on those different types of connections...
