Can't import purchased songs into iMovie

I used to be able to import songs I'd purchased at the iTunes store into iMovie HD (v.5.0.2).

Now, when I try, I get a message saying my computer isn't authorized to play the song (a song I'd just played in iTunes) and it tells me to click over to iTunes to authorize it. So, I do. It tells me I've got X number of machines authorized (the same number I've always had authorized) and then I get an error in iMovie. When I tried to import the now-authorized(?) song again, it gave me the same message. And when I re-authorized (?!), it still said the same number of machines were authorized.

I threw out the project and started another one, but that didn't do anything. I restarted, but that didn't do anything. Help?

Because I know I've imported purchased iTunes music into my timeline before.

Yep, I concur. BUT, it all depends on whether the audio track in question was copy protected or not. Some older ones are not. Most modern ones are.

In iTunes, click on the file in question and go to Get Info. That will tell you whether or not it is protected.

If it is, THEN you need the workaround of burning it to a CD, re-importing it from that CD back into iTunes, saving it as a AIFF file, and then iMovie will accept it with open arms!

I just tried importing a song I had previously imported and suddenly it would no longer do it. That song was protected -- it had the lock symbol on it -- but it had been previously imported into iMovie HD 5.0.2 (the same version I'm using now).

I know I can do the CD-R workaround, but I'm still confused as to why iMovie HD 5.0.2 previously allowed me to import a DRM-protected song purchased in the iTunes store, but now it will no longer allow me to import that same song without "authorization"... and why, even after I authorize the song, it still errors out.

BTW -- I'm using Quicktime 7.0.4. I don't know if that's relevant or not, but I figured I'd add it.

Oh, also: I just had my OS re-installed at the Apple Store. I don't know if that's just a coincidence, if that has anything to do with what's going on... I know that, right after the re-install, my Quicktime Player wouldn't play .avi files until I re-installed DivX and Xvid. Again, not sure if that's relevant, but maybe it'll help.

I have EXACTLY the same problem..and it JUST started July 29. Up until that time I had readily used purchased iTunes music in my iMovies.
I read the string..but I see no reason why, all of a sudden, we have to make CDs and then import from them?????
Did Apple put thru a change in iTunes?
I downloaded iTunes 7.3, and that didn't help.
