multi-track recording/audio interface in garageband

You would be better off not using a mixer and just use a firewire interface. If you want a mixer get one that has a built in interface.

THIS IS SOOOOO crazy! Just this week i was inquiring and researching about this same perspective setup for multitracking in GARAGEBAND.

As brave as it is, IT CAN BE DONE, and the newer macs (intel) run GB alot smoother.

In my own lil experiment, i have found that after downloading the necessary driver updates for garage band and CORE AUDIO DRIVER (digidesign) for an intel mac; GARAGE BAND DID recognize all the ins and outs of my DIGI 002...AND FOR YOUR SITUATION I STRONGLY RECOMMEND SAVING UP THE GRAND, AND GETTING A DIGI 002 off of ebay or something. Great for pro tools, EVEN GREATER FOR something as limited as GARAGEBAND... DIGI002!

would an audio interface have enough mic inputs for say.. mic-ing drums
and guitar, while recording all mics at the same time?

Me and my band use garageband for multi track recording and it works a treat. Our setup however is a fairly pricey one. Our mics go into a Behringer ADA8000:



Which is wired via optical to a Digi 002 Rack:



And then firewire into the macbook pro. But Im not sure if youd be better off with a digi 002 mixer as im guessing that does the whole thing for you. The only other thing id ask, as i wouldnt know but im sure a few others here would, looking at the fact you have just a macbook, is it capable of recording 8 tracks simultaniously at once smoothly?

if the wee 800Mc, 640MB iBook i use for recording can handle 8 tracks at a time from my firepod, the macbook shouldn't have any problem.

Can't go wrong with a firepod. As for mic everyone uses shure 57 and 58s. But I've been using a AudioTechnica PRO 63 for micing my amp for recording and live and really like. and pretty cheap.
