How do I cut 30 sec. snippet from song, then fade in and out?

I want to take a song in iTunes and pull out a 30 second piece of it to use on the menu screens in iDVD ... what's the trick? I pulled it into GarageBand and was able to Split it but couldn't fade it in at beginning and out at end so it didn't sound "chopped".
I'm thinking it should be easy with all these iLife applications, I'm just not finding it.

In Garageband where the name of the song is below where it says "Tracks" there are 5 tiny icons. Click on the last one, which is a little triangle. Now you will see the Track Volume bar, which works much the same way as the audio track in iMovie. You can click to volume bar to add points, drag up or down to fade in or out. You can get very specific control by zooming in on the track with the slider at the lower left of the window.
