Believe it or not, here is your best replacement:

$15 and it's much more solid then the original back leg. The padded arms hold the monitor snugly. I've been using it for a year. The only caveat is with this stand if you're using the monitor flat on the desk, the stand legs fall short. You can either: A: Mount the monitor upside down and do a 180 flip in OSX or B: Put the stand on a two inch or so coffee table book.

The hinge is probably broken in two and the only way that I replaced mine was really not at all difficult. I assume that the clear plastic is OK and that the grey soft metal is the broken part. You must locate a replacement hinge ( make sure it is for your model ) and you need to take apart the rear panel of the monitor off. Unplug the monitor and you will need 2 different sizes of allen keys (the 6 sided ones) one size for the rear chromed screws and the other size for the 3 smaller screws that are attached to the stand itself. Use the proper size that fit snugly ( they are sold as a set of various sizes at Home Depot or any well stocked hardware store) About 6 to 9 dollars a set. Lift off the rear panel and carefully note the decorative cups that come apart from the hinge, save these. Get a philips screwdriver and remove the 4 screws that attach the hinge to the back of the monitor, Replace with new hinge & tighten firmly. Replace the side cups. Replace the rear cover. Screw in all the back panel screws, attach foot and screw in the 3 smaller allen screw. You're done. Check ebay for hinge ( they are not cheap, go for 30-50 dollars average) . It would be wise to purchase the allen keys as both METRIC and SAE sizes just in case as I don't remember for sure. ( Handy tool to have around in both versions). Hope I helped.

I was 'browsing' for information on an M8536 and saw your post on a hinge problem. Interestingly I am looking for the very part apparently has broken on your display. Not the hinge but the acrylic 'leg' that fastens to it.
I have seen replacement hinges a couple places and if you haven't resolved your problem, let me know. I'll steer you to what I've seen.

But, if you found another solution and still have the broken off 'leg', let me know. I'll certainly make it worth your while.

I also have a cinema display (20") with a broken hinge. The metal hinge is okay, but this morning I heard a creaking sound, and all of a sudden the acrylic casing around the metal screws of the hinge cracked in half horizontally. The display is almost never moved or adjusted, so--hello, Apple, are you listening?--this is obviously a major design flaw.

Since both halves of the casing are now cracked--that is, the half that came away with the acrylic leg and the half that's attached to the display itself--it looks like I'll need to find a whole new leg, remove the useless casing that's still attached to the display, and reinstall the leg, or find someone to do it.

Anyone with mechanical ability know if and how this can be done, and where you get the part? Thanks for any suggestions!

I thought of trying to use Epoxy to glue it back on, but that sounds so lame it's almost worthy of the genius who designed this piece of crap in the first place.

Way too many Apple clear acrylic displays in all sizes have the same major flaw. The stand. It really is the Achilles heel so to speak. I Have a broken 23 HD with a cracked screen that occured when the leg gave way and the screen fell to the rear of the desk and unto the floor. I was just adjusting the angle and it went. I wish that Apple realizes this and can offer new replacement legs on sending them the broken ones as proof.

TVI: Wow, I just looked at the $15 tripod guitar stand you suggest, and it sounds like a great solution!

Just to make sure before ordering it: you're saying, Instead of removing the broken stand/hinge or whatever from the back of the cinema monitor and reattaching a whole new one, you can just order the guitar stand, set it up on your desk and set up the monitor on the two front "feet" that are meant to hold the guitar? (I know this is probably exactly what you mean, but having my monitor stand break off for no reason other than shoddy design--HEAR THAT, APPLE?--has made me over-cautious.)

Neat suggestion--hope to try it. Thanks!

You have it exactly right. The monitor rests on the two foam covered arms sticking out of the bottom of the stand. The only caveat is with this stand if you're using the monitor flat on the desk, the stand legs fall short. You can either: A: Mount the monitor upside down and do a 180 flip in OSX or B: Put the stand on a two inch or so coffee table book. Or you can just mosey over to Guitar Center and see if you can dig up a better one. If you do that you have to pay close attention to the stand. Lots of guitar stands have a "U" shaped part at the top of the stand to hold the guitar neck from going side to side. Look for one that doesn't have that.
