Dumb? It’s a brilliant improvement. Now you can open the Control Center from ANY app, not just the watch face screen. Someone at Apple was really on the ball with this enhanced feature.

YES! I used the feedback link to tell Apple how much I like the new interface.

Quick-press the oblong button next to the stem. Tap the iPhone icon on the Control Center display that opened when you pressed the side button. I just tried it, and it worked perfectly.

Because they foolishly expected users to read the update document to learn how some functions of the watch have been moved around. And also expected users to read the other posts in a thread that answer their question before they post.

There are SIXTEEN pages in this thread, and you didn’t bother to read ANY OF THEM BEFORE POSTING. If you had you would know that the feature to open the Control Center has been moved to the Side Button, under the digital crown.

NOTE: Slow and Slowest settings do not mean you have to wait a full second or 2 seconds between press and release. It just means you do not need to be super fast.

What should pop up is the Control Center, not one icon. What is popping up?

Control Center should then show you the iPhone ping icon (find my iPhone), Battery percentage, Flashlight, Water Lock, Airplane mode, Alarm silence, Theater mode, and all the other Control Center services.

An alternate way to get some of the Control Center services is:

"Hey Siri, find my iPhone"

"Hey Siri, Flashlight"

"Hey Siri, Battery"

"Hey Siri, Airplane mode"

Of course, if you had bothered to read the release notes (watchOS 10 - Apple) when you updated you would have seen this:

Scroll Up: 1 step

Press a button: 1 step

This new way to open the control center has one major advantage: you can do it no matter what is displayed on the screen. The scroll up can only be done from the watch face.

And the answer is right at the top of this page, even with a picture showing you where the button is. I’ll repeat the picture here:
