iPhone 3G apps crash on startup and cause iPhone to restart

I have found that when starting up some apps on my new iPhone (important: doesn't matter which apps) that they fail to start up and crash back to the iPhone 'desktop'. When this happens, try as I might, they almost ALL seem to do this, until finally the iPhone takes it upon itself to restart (which takes longer than a normal restart. However, after the restart, the apps work again! This sometimes happens after the iPhone has been 'asleep' for a while, but not always. It's as if just opening new apps is too much for it, or that other processes going on in the iPhone are crashing with the apps.
Anybody else having this?
(I have other issues with this new phone here in the UK - see my other posts).

Add my name to this ever growing list of very unhappy iP3G owners. After syncing with iTunes last night, EVERY app that I had purchased from the App Store crashes on start up. I touch the icon, there is momentary transition to each program's initial screen, then POOF, the app crashes and I am returned to the iP3G main screen. Even AOL radio crashes - but none of the other delivery apps that were on the device when I purchased it.

Unlike some of the other posts on here, removing one app and reinstalling it DID NOT fix this problem.

Those of you that suggest deleting everything and starting over may not appreciate the amount of time invested in setting all this up in the first place. From passwords, to notes, to setting favorite AOL radio stations, etc, etc. Deleting the apps and starting over is not a desirable solution in my case.

What is up with Apple these days? The best place for this device may be the return line at the Apple store. I am very frustrated at this moment.

OK. I'm another dealing with this fun, work flow killing, app thing.

I'm not sure what exactly fixed for me (for now). But here's what I did.

Sync'd it with iTunes. No luck.

Restarted. No luck.

Deleted one app and reinstalled it. Worked for that app. Wait for more than just that app but not all of them?

Then I started moving the apps that weren't working to the next screen and past all of the pre-installed apps. For now they all work?

I'm on an original iPhone and am having the same problem. I have restored to phone too many times to relate. Started a restore about 7 this morning and it's now 1:17 and still in the middle of the restore! Wacky. My problems, I believe started after updating to the newest version of iTunes. But my phone goes into the endless Apple restart loop. Restarting the phone doesn't help, and a hard restart doesn't help either.

I also find that my syncing isn't putting everything on that I tell it to. I have to sync multiple times to get the phone to sync properly. The computer is authorized, etc. Can't figure it out, but Apple needs to get to it ASAP. I'm in the same boat as another poster in that I'd have to sync my phone when I go to bed and hope the thing works by the time I get up.

I did find that the Applications section had a red "1" next to it indicating that an app needed updating. If I checked updates it would download all my apps again, but still indicate that there was an app that needed updating! ? I started deleting apps and then downloading them from the store again. Found the offending app and now the indicator is gone. But still waiting now for the restore to complete.

Question: When one is doing a restore (and you'd think I'd know this after having done so many restores in the last few days) is there a visual indicator that something's going on other than the "Restoring iPhone from backup..." dialogue? I'm wondering if there's supposed to be, like, the spinning sync icon or anything like that?

Next (after the restore, if it ever finishes) I'll try deleting all apps from the phone then slowly install them. We'll see.

Add me to the list. All of my iphone apps are currently crashing after a sync. The temporary fix is to delete the apps from my iPhone and re-download them (losing all of my data). As soon as a sync is done, the problem re-occurs. I even tried deleting all of the apps from my iPhone and my itunes library then re-downloading them all. This fix worked until the next sync. My computer is authorized and I'm logged in to my itunes account. This is so frustrating as I had spent several hours entering data into some of the apps. Also, when I went to re-download the apps, Apple charged me for every one of them again. (I am currently having this reversed though). Right now I'm running firmware 2.0.1 on a 3G iphone.

I originated this thread and am saddened to see how many people are suffering the same things.

Just to update, I rang AppleCare support and mentioned it, and as expected Apple are "aware of this and are addressing the issue", but (as we all know) the only "fix" currently is to download the apps again - BUT they say that if you download them THROUGH THE iPHONE,rather than through iTunes, they have noticed that the crashes don't happen.

Forgive me, but as far as I can see....
1. To throw your apps away and download them again through the phone would take DAYS to do in my case,
2. This would only cure the problem until the first sync and then you'd be back to square one with crashing apps all over the place.

One of the main reasons people are buying the iPhone3G is use the 3rd party apps - this needs to be absolute priority for Apple now that they've fixed MobileMe.

If there was anything at least remotely close to the iPhone (which obviously, there isn't), now would be the point I'd switch - the issues are inexcusable and make Apple look like they've completely dropped any sort of QA just to get stuff out the door, but the way that these issues are being dealt with is even less excusable... zero transparency, no official acknowledgement of issues. Apple's blaming it on 3rd party apps is nuts, since it's hardly reasonable to assume that EVERY 3rd party app is defective, nevermind the fact that Apple's own remote app is affected as well.

The random freezing (in all apps, up to 30+ seconds) is not fixed in 2.0.1, which is by far the most serious issue. Add to all that mess the issues with battery life (I barely get through a day, even with 3G off it's much worse than the original iPhone), MobileMe... Anyhow, enough about that.

I have tried removing a number of apps, re-installing, but no luck. Restarts don't help, nor does doing a 'reset all settings'. I'm really at a loss here.

I also had this problem after sync'ing the new 2.0.1 firmware to my iPhone 3G this morning. All apps from the App Store would start, then immediately go back to the iPhone Home screen. However, I have found the solution ... at least for my setup!

Install another app from the App Store using the iPhone directly. It doesn't matter which new free throw-away-later app you choose. Enter your iTunes password as required for the download, and let the installation complete. Presto! All previously downloaded apps work again as normal.

It looks like the 2.0.1 update must have wiped out some stored authentication password previously entered when apps were downloaded. No need to download them all again.

Follow the below Sync Process whenever syncing
1. Performed the sync.
2. After sync complete, eject iphone through itunes.
3. Do not unplug the sync cable yet from the pc or iphone.
4. See your iphone screen, you will see on the top left a round animated circle shown always when something is being processed.
5. Wait for the processing icon (the animated circle) to disappear and then disconnect the cables.

Everytime I sync I amke sure that after the eject the processing circle disappears on the iphone before I disconnect the cable and my apps remain in working condition.

This worked to reset everything for me on Mac OS X 10.5.4 with my 3G. I'll repost if it stops working again outside of following this procedure.

I had that same problem... But think i found a solution... It's worked for me so far. From a fresh itunes folder... (I have another computer and installed itunes on it and used the itunes folder from it.) The on the original computer i reset the synch information and deleted the the backups from it. Then import the songs from the old itunes folder... You'll have to rebuild your playlists... Then plug you iphone, do a restore and and start as a new phone... Do not back up!!! Then download all the apps you want and had. Then synch. Then DON'T synch again!!! I myself am waiting for the 2.1 update... and don't update your apps... I think that's what screws it up the synching... Because i noticed i started ahving problems with the apps synching after syching and updating them. the mobile apps folder when you explore it has multiple copies stored in the folder even the ones i thought i deleted permanently.... Hope this worls for you...
